Snap Back

People say, Pop back like a rubber band.
Do you understand what’s meant by this demand?
With too much stretch, rubber bands disintegrate;
as do I, with too much piled upon my plate.

One needs something that can take the heat
from baking life’s oft’ challenging “treats”
to deal with its long-term-storage stuff
and does not break when things get too rough.

More than these magic bands that come dyed
colors, can be frozen or deep-fried
is friendship and love the heart can glean
from the hand that extends, felt, not seen.

Symbiotic

Tigress and Piglet both in critical need
third-party interest in doing good deed.

Into this mixture stir acceptance, to taste
smoothing the bitterness that differences make.

Mother’s milk drying up, spirits sinking down
after triplets succumb to death-call’s sound

is a story that pulls the heart strings, anew
but, alas, a fabrication – just not true.

Sriracha Tiger Zoo is the 2004-photo place
where animals mix without notice of race
Saimai nursing piglets, herself, nursed by a sow
Shows us peace is possible in the here-and-now.

Sow Benjamaj divides her nursing time
between tiger cubs and her own baby swine.
Who would think she could hold all so dear?
For this, she’s awarded mother-of-the-year.

The photos taken, real, doubtlessly prove
when giving love, there is little to lose.
Visual entertainment for visitors to see
serves as inspiration for you and for me.

Benjamaj and Saimai to us do not preach
through their actions, rather, do they lovingly teach
all things are possible when we look at each other
not with predator eyes but with those of a mother.

About this poem:
A friend sent photos with accompanying story about mother tiger in CA loosing her triplet cubs. Although the story was fabricated, the photos were real - with their own story to tell.

Eligible Bachelor

Is there someone as feckless as myself?
But just as lusty when the mood is right
Someone who won’t mind washing the delft,
Watching the football and drinking all night

Don’t expect me to decorate,
Cut down trees or dig the weeds
I won’t be much help if you’re in a state
But I may surprise you with selfless deeds

I have a temper and love a good rant
But I’ll calm down soon if you just agree
I’ll do what I can and shirk what I can’t
So you better get used to humouring me

Your family will hate me so best we don’t meet
Tell them I’m shy and I work odd hours
I’m much too boring to flirt or to cheat
On Valentine’s Day, there’ll always be flowers

I’ve got a good memory and won’t forget
Birthday and anniversary cards
I’ll annually mark the day that we met
With food and wine and kindest regards

I’ll break every promise I promised to keep
So promise you’ll never hold me to them
And every night before we fall asleep
I’ll kiss your cold shoulder and whisper Je t’aime

you have to wonder, don't you?

It seems there are lonely people everywhere
looking for the one person to fulfill their life;
how many of you are genuine out there?
How many of us will find husband or wife?

If nothing else ever comes of this trial,
At least I can always say it was fun to look.
I’ve met and talked to men both funny and vile,
but hey, you have to at least try the book.

When all is said and done and I give up
this futile search and understand why I’m alone,
that’s the day my true love will show up
and it’ll be too late for us; I only hope I’m wrong.

But you have to wonder, don’t you?
And how will you know unless you try?
There isn’t much to lose but time and you
may just get lucky once before you have to die.

Unaware

All the sky is clear tonight
Your warmth is on my chest
My arm around your waist is tight
Your lips at my behest

Your eyes are sleeping--so I see
Your breathing shallow is
And you belong to only me
No need to steal a kiss.

My mind is clear for once tonight
No clouds have ruined its course
And I am holding you real tight
I the very first.

And you are lying silently
Within my strong embrace
And I would like the world to see
My face so near your face.

My eyes are troubled not tonight
with mists that cause a spill
and linger on your skin so white
Sometimes against my will

But if my will has lost tonight
and made them languish there....
I'll kiss you silently tonight
though you be unaware,

i, i can turn a grey sky blue but not 4 u

I, I CAN TURN A SKY BLUE BUT NOT FOR YOU

There’s this woman who goes by the name of Mrs. Satan Incarnate
And I hesitate to use the word “hate”
Because my mama always told me to say “I don’t like something or someone”
And If you met her in person you’d swear she was a nun

But under her Habit is a nickel plated 45 caliber gun
Well I don’t need a gun, knife or spear
To beat you at your own game my dear
and these are words you need to hear

She always thinks she can outdraw me with her speed
But she knows not I enjoy making people bleed
Metaphorically speaking of course because that would be a horrific deed
still and all I don’t dig her the way I abhor gregarious people and greed

She thinks I’m a criminal who she can’t trust both day or night
And about that only she’s god-damned right
I don’t play no games and especially with women like her
Because a headache and nausea are all that which will occur

Hey baby, I ain’t no chump I’m a champ
And on your mouth I’d like to place a clamp
You write things about me with which I agree
But I’m advising you against discovering what my anger can degree

I can stare at The Holy Bible and make it burst into flames
And I think you must know how I take advantage of dames
So keep riling up my anger and you will see
Precisely how petulant and impatient I can be

So here is some advice you best heed
You are and have nothing I need
So don’t mess with me Mrs. Satan Incarnate
Because you will fleetingly discover the havoc I can create

JACK WITH A BEER BACK

JACK WITH A BEER BACK

I decided to take me a on a little road trip
Just me and Jack Daniels so I took me a sip
Mr. Daniels with a chaser I didn’t need
And neither Jack nor I knew where the road would lead

At mile marker number 15 I drank me some more
Jack told me I needed some food so we stopped at a store
Bought me some bologna, cheese and a six pack of beer
Revved up my ride and threw her in gear

Mr. Daniels demanded I go a lot faster
And pretty soon that bottle became my master
A nip of Jack and a sip of beer is all I required
Some people might have but I never grew tired

The road stretched before us as if it were our guide
Exactly where we were headed we didn’t decide
Mr. Daniels sat next to me insisting where I steer
While in the back seat sat a silent six pack of beer

Jack and the beer were having some convoluted conversation
But I told them both to shut up or I’d lose my concentration
I held tightly to the wheel as we sped down the road
With me unawares that soon I’d be carrying a heavy load

My vehicle vied with a violation of the law
We wanted to go to a barr but ended up at that store
Days later when I finally got home I cursed Mr. Daniels for what he had willed
And then the Judge gave me twenty-five to forty-five for the three young people I killed

were, was,isn't, ain't

WERE, WAS, ISN’T, AIN’T

Many words were at my disposal
As I recounted my proposal
Not upon my bended knees
But all it took was a sacred “please”

Flowery words could have flourished with my speech
I could have said “remember how infatuated we were on that sun-bleached beach”
There were words whirling inside my head
Every syllable that soon might be said

I could have talked about a love so great which was ever ours
A union that brought together two forces with fourfold powers
I could have talked about the fact that we were a team
And how it all started with one starry bright dream

I could have told you why the universe deems what it brings
I could have told you how you drenched me in wondrous things
But then you drenched me in depression that caused me to do anything except die
………………………..I could have said so many things but in sum and total I said, “goodbye”

WHEN HOPE TURNED TO DOPE

WHEN HOPE TURNED TO DOPE

My memories of yesterday are hazy at best
Perhaps they’ve faded away at retribution’s request
Yet somehow I remember popcorn and pop-guns as a child
And then came seventeen when I discovered poppy plants grow wild

My adolescent days are difficult to recall
I hardly remember too many of them at all
But with great difficulty I found a way to cope
For then came seventeen when I discovered dope

I remember she and me holed up in a seedy hotel
It wasn’t but should have been dubbed “Hotel Hell’
Because that’s where the shadows of its hallways had finally led
While I was shooting up on the floor and she upon the bed

In the land of the rising sun is from where the powder came
And there was no one except she and I to blame
Somehow slanted eyes knew precisely what to do
And how to make heroin from the poppies they all grew

We’d checked into that hotel with empty luggage in tow
We left them behind so the clerk never knew when we’d go
We ran up a charge for room service to order up some food
But the dope we had injected mitigated hunger’s mood

Seventeen is now coming upon seventy too fast
And ever fades the remembrances of a very shady past
They are mostly visions my mind commands me not to save
However before I turned twenty I was visiting six very good friend’s grave

WITH DEFFERENCE TO JACK JOHNSON

I AM NOW AN OPTIMISTIC MYSTIC

I’m doing better than when we were together
The universe has granted me delicate weather
Today I can laugh at the mistake you made
For today a thousand tomorrows I wouldn’t trade

Life is easier without the doubt of loving you
And it’s like my soul is hovering above the blue
Just like an angel with wings that never molt
And my body is always a safe distance from a lightening bolt

In the morning I awake with a smile because you left
And to think others believed I’d be left bereft
But that’s because they didn’t know the you I knew
As my body is still hovering beyond the blue

So life for you can be rich but I don’t care
Because I no longer have to suffer you being unfair
You can be donning diamonds, mink and imported Italian leather
Because I’m doing better today then when we were together
