montecito: The way you live your life matters because the people that lived it with you will have that memory after you die and that is how your life/soul goes on. IMO..

ooby_dooby: This may well be a question with no answer. Why me? Why now? Dwelling on these questions can drive you crazy. I've come to the conclusion that I am here and now because before I was concieved I didn't exist to dwell on it, and after I die, I will dwell on it no more. 300 years ago somebody else probably pondered the same thing that we are pondering today. 1000 years ago he wasn't and today he isn't. It is what it is. Enjoy the life you have because it is all you will ever get and when you die it won't matter anymore.
Well there is a difference between a live and dead brain. I think it's that difference that makes some think there is a soul. I remain agnostic as to wether that is true or not. To me it just points once again to the mystery that surrounds us all. These questions that may drive some crazy have not driven me crazy. I have come to some of the same conclusions you have. But I am open to the mystery and dismiss psychic phenomena. Part of my enjoyment in life is pondering that mystery. I also very much have a life too.

That's true R. I used to think that our soul was energy and that energy can't die so in essence part of us moves on to another person or even an animal. I pretty much doubt that now. I think we want to believe that we have a soul because for some of us, death is frightening if we believe that our soul doesn't die and neither does all of our body. We're just trying to hang on forever..........

venere08: HI Conrad, I don't know about your Randy friend ...I can only refer you again, to the published scientific experiments by the University of Arizona. They would have used strict methodology and would not risk their professional integrity. Having results published in peer review journals is no mean feat. In any case, skeptics are labelled that for a reason. They never really intend to seriously consider any position other than their own, no matter what evidence might be brought to bear. Sceptics do not phase me, because I prefer to remain completely open to discovery. Closed mindedness isn't very appealing to me.
That's not true about sceptics. Sceptics employ the use of logic and the scientific method.
Sceptics aren't "labelled" sceptics. Being a sceptic is merely a case of a person not being merely credulous and believing things utterly without evidence.
The Veritas Laboratory you're referring to (which studies mediums) at the University of Arizona is one of two or three such organisations in all of North America. Parapsychology was popular until the last three decades. What you're omitting here is that there are only a few such institutions left. They've such themselves down across North America, systematically, because not a one of them were able to produce viable evidence- a must if they're to justify their existence.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but them's the facts.
ooby_dooby: Cool air til it's a liquid and you can see it. you can smell it, stand in front of a fan and you can feel it and it most certainly has weight in fact a 1" square column of air the height of the atmosphere weighs a staggering 14.7 lbs.
Definition of RELIGION the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance 2: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices 3archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness 4: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith
The existence of a soul is a belief, a matter of faith, not a fact. By the way in the case of the telephone you're not actually hearing the persons voice but a reasonable facsimile of it produced mechanically.
Go back a few years before people knew how to measure air. They knew they could feel wind and breeze on their skin but on a still day without "altering" the air you can sense it's presence ...
What if there is no way yet to "measure" the soul within a body?
I don't care how many different definitions of religions you give Ooby. As far as I'm concerned, spirituality and the existence of soul has nothing to do with religion. Religions is about doctrines. Spirituality and soul cannot be "framed" or be made to behave in any particular way by humans.
The existence of soul/spirit is not part of a belief system. It is something that many humans have experienced the existence of during their lifetime. Just because others have not had that same experience does not mean the experience is a lie.

'Abdu'l-Bahá on the Journey of the Soul
The Bahá'í writings affirm that "the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality the most learned of men hath failed to grasp, and whose mystery no mind, however acute, can ever hope to unravel."2 Concerning the soul or spirit of human beings and its relationship to the physical body, Bahá'u'lláh explained:
Know thou that the soul of man is exalted above, and is independent of all infirmities of body or mind. That a sick person showeth signs of weakness is due to the hindrances that interpose themselves between his soul and his body, for the soul itself remaineth unaffected by any bodily ailments. ... When it leaveth the body, however, it will evince such ascendancy, and reveal such influence as no force on earth can equal ... consider the sun which hath been obscured by the clouds. Observe how its splendor appeareth to have diminished, when in reality the source of that light hath remained unchanged. The soul of man should be likened unto this sun, and all things on earth should be regarded as his body. So long as no external impediment interveneth between them, the body will, in its entirety, continue to reflect the light of the soul, and to be sustained by its power. As soon as, however, a veil interposeth itself between them, the brightness of the light seemeth to lessen.... The soul of man is the sun by which his body is illumined, and from which it draweth its sustenance, and should be so regarded.3
The soul not only continues to live after the physical death of the human body, but is, in fact, immortal. Bahá'u'lláh wrote:
Know thou of a truth that the soul, after its separation from the body, will continue to progress until it attaineth the presence of God, in a state and condition which neither the revolution of ages and centuries, nor the changes and chances of this world, can alter. It will endure as long as the Kingdom of God, His sovereignty, His dominion and power will endure.4
In commenting on the immortality of the rational soul, 'Abdu'l- Baha explained that everything in creation which is composed of elements is subject to decomposition:
The soul is not a combination of elements, it is not composed of many atoms, it is of one indivisible substance and therefore eternal. It is entirely out of the order of the physical creation; it is immortal
trueheart1941: you mean................................ghost,ssssssties
Never experienced ghosts and highly doubt their existence. But I have had some profound unexplainable experiences in my life. Back in my mid 20s I was in the navy half a world away from home and one morning the wake up whistle sounded and I found myself in a semiconscious state not being able to wake up. Suddenly I saw a clear vision of a family member who I was very close to, a very clear vision in black outline and everything around it brilliant white. There was an intense stare to me from this person and along with this came an overwhelming feeling that he was either dead or dying. For a while I couldn't shake myself out of this and then I woke up. That haunted me all day and the next morning I was woken up by the ships chaplain and read the telegram. For several reasons I've never been the same again. I have had two similar experiences in my life where I had a sense that someone was going to die soon and it happened. My whole life has been a spiritual awakening and as has been mentioned that has nothing to do with religion or science. I was once an atheist raised by atheists. I became agnostic.
Dadude62: I think (know) that we become more receptive (good and bad) as we are able to let go of rigid religious belief or rigid scientific logic. Having been of scientific mind I was shocked into it or out of it. When this happens you're not going crazy as some rigid types believe.
I know
I also know mediums who were put on heavy medication when they were young because they were allegedly "mad" because they saw and heard "things" other people couldn't ...
