Actually - while the primary objectives of Nasa and the space program might not be everyones cup of tea, the secondary spin offs have had a massive impact on society globally.
Not so with the Russian space program as they had a philosophy of getting the most out of off the shelf components rather than pushing the technological envelope. I guess thats why the US and Europe are best at one and Russia has reigned supreme at the other.
Regardless, those who are against the funding of Nasa and similar space industry related programs run by other agencies both within the US and in other nations will soon see a shift away from national spending to corporate spending.
Private enterprise is taking over the space industry and they will get things done far cheaper and with greater success.
I wanted to run for office once. They told me that I would not have much success unless I had a party. So I invited some mates over and handed out some free drinks and we all watched the football and had a barby and played back yard cricket while the girls gossiped. But still I didn't get a seat. Not even one of those nice ones with the inbuild cushions.

IMHO There should be an aid program that is a last resort for those that have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. The REAL answer lies with the availability of jobs.
All of the problems with Social Security in the US are the result of the Washington gang of theives that robbed the money we contributed to the program. They just could not stand having that much money being saved for it's intended purpose and made it available to their rotten schemes by switching it into the general fund. All of us seniors can thank a Democrat administration for that little juggling act.
