Only one of your nine choices, Eddie Van Halen, is "from the '70s." If "from the '70s" is really the criteria, there's no question the answer is Mark Knopfler. Witness the fact that as soon as Dire Strait's eponymous first album was released in 1978, two of those on your list, Carlos Santana ("Winning") and Eric Clapton ("I Can't Stand It") immediately aped Knopfler's distinctive style.
U2's David Howell Evans aka The Edge is the best guitarist ever lived. My vote extends also Brian May of Queen band.

yes Edge is definitely among the best but prolly more the 80s and 90s than the 70s

@fel, yay! thanks for the support. I'm U2holic. Although Edge only started in late 70's he's my best. He makes U2 solid till now due to his distinct experimental style

Impossible question. You are compairing guitarists of different genres. You are also compairing a lot of lead guitarist with rhythem guitarists. What is a better guitarist somebody who can play lead well, write good song structure. Create great riffs. Anybody could argue any of the above on these points.
Its Tony Iommi for me on the basis he can play lead excellent riff writer, but then metal is my favourite genre. So anybody can argue any of the above based on individual musical taste.

Yes, its like dancing, you get absorbed in the(don't know weather you'd say) the feel,the enjoyment of it. Hard to explain, i just know i love it.
There are so many great guitar players through history, but Jimmy page had a long history before Led Zepplin playing on a huge number of bands tracks. Was great to see some one put Link Wray the god father of distorion

I would shortlist 10 guitarists who have been central to my musical interests and influences....(please dont tell me i dont know what im talking about, this is a personal choice, you will no doubt have a different one, which is by no means "wrong", its just different)..
