I am considering and in fact have a great opportunity to go and work in either Afghanistan or Iraq late this fall after my retirement is settled. It would be working for an NGO and be geared towards reconstruction. I've been to both countries before and am painfully aware of the dangers but there's a part of me that really feels driven to do this. Would any of you go?

don't do it....there's so much crap in the soil from all of the bombs and such, it wouldn't be worth it.

If you feel the need to help, do something safer
Thanks, I'm still mulling it over. I have awhile before I need to accept or not. I'm glad you posted as you brought something up I hadn't thought about

I say if you want to go and work there then you should do it...
you said you are aware of the dangers and so on...
You will always wonder about it...be safe..be alert..

I wouldn't go work in either country....the fact still remains that Americans are targets by the insurgents no matter what job you do in either country....they love to target civilians....in my mind it's still too risky and dangerous....Americans are kidnapped and killed all the time...no matter what they are doing in those countries!!!!!!!!!

what didn't you understand in my post? I said don't do it!

Thanks for your comments Hugs and you're right we are targets there. That's a definate consideration as I poder this.
I have lots of friends who have been offered the same deals. Since you're aware of the dangers but driven to go do it.. I say go. Especially since you said it's not about the money.. It's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't.
but yeah... I'd say you should weigh out your options a little as far as the job you take. If you don't want to deal with the dangers, try to take a job ON POST.
kissmedeeply: It seems like you have a little time to think it over...
You did say the Fall...
but as i read it you seem as its leaning toward wanting that opportunity...
Way out the pros and cons....
But i wish you all the best in ur decsions...
I think only you know what is good for you....
Sometimes it is about taking the Risk...
All the best in what you decide...
I do have some time which is good. I like to really think about things like this before I act and this is an important decision. You are right also that I am leaning towards it and I do appreciate your comments.
It does sound like pretty neat stuff and I have been in contact with others doing similar work.
What's drawing me is really complicated but to make a long story short, I am really concerned about being able to transition back to a "normal life" I have spent the better part of the past 28 years overseas. Initially, as I approached retirement I thought it would be great to go back home but I am finding that you can never really go back. Besides, they are pretty screwed up places right now and there's actually a push to help.

Well it's a huge decision...not one I would do....BUT if you do go...Just be careful....there is certainly more than a little danger there for Americans and other civilians of anyone involved in the war!!!!!!

I would think it would be terribly difficult to get accustomed to all our "sloth" after being in such a different environment. When I'm faced with decisions like this, I usually find some quiet time, a big glass of wine, and I sit down and ask the one question that always gets my imagination going....
"Where do you want to be 10 years from now?"
Usually after considering things from "the sky is the limit" perspective, the answers start coming to me. Sounds crazy, but it's a really good exercise.

Good luck.
I will have to try that but I'll probably do it with a beer or two (I am sooo uncultured)

I'll give you really specific advice which i hope you will take very seriously if you consider working in either country.
Find out where you will be contracted on what basis and find out the conditions you will be housed in, IE will you be housed in a guarded complex by "contract agent security" or guarded by the military, as there's a specific difference.
The locals are embedded even through the security service right down to the ministry of the interior so never travel anywhere without a loaded firearm and i'm not just talking about a sidearm and make sure you carry a grenade specifically around your neck, just in case the worst may happen.
Then there's what you will actually be doing and if you have and what the security detail will be, or if you will be providing this service to others?
Remember, your personal security is dependant on say 8 people you will not know and have no idea on their capabilities or professionalism, especially if their "subcontracted in".
Also it's important to remember contracters have no authority and are basically a private army who aren't accountable so you never know if your mixing with "Wash outs" and the only criteria for signing on is the ability to hold it together until your on the aircraft and don't have a mental breakdown on site!!
If you go make sure you spend plenty of time on a range and make damn sure you can clean your sidearm with virtually your eyes closed to clear any stoppage in your sleep.
All else fails you can always find some poor sod like me to watch over you!
