CjTenorSax: Yep, I think you're right about that until it gets too hot temperature wise. Hi Dennis!
After considering this for several months I applied for a position in late November. I have received an acceptance and if all goes well I will be leaving in Feb/March.
I just wanted to say thanks to all those that provided input on this even though I ultimately went against the majority of poll responses. No one has ever accused me of being exceedingly bright.
Seriously, I feel what I am doing is right and I really do appreciate the input.

I think you made the right decision, it was obviously something you wanted to do.
As a travelling teacher, although the Moscow metro is the closest I´ve been to any real danger! I too would have found making a decision difficult, but I believe I would have accepted.

Be safe and enjoy the experience.
Thanks Jan..
Moscow metrow. I've been there a few years back. Very deep and the turnstiles open and close really fast if you use a camera flash near them. One of the folks with us got a right smart charlie horse while he was going through.
I am considering and in fact have a great opportunity to go and work in either Afghanistan or Iraq late this fall after my retirement is settled. It would be working for an NGO and be geared towards reconstruction. I've been to both countries before and am painfully aware of the dangers but there's a part of me that really feels driven to do this. Would any of you go?
WOW......phew......
My total admiration......even thou you shame me having to answer you......
no....I wouldn't. My own reasons as to why....not the danger, other...
I am honoured to have gotten to know....may you achieve what you desire...
And may The Great Spirit enshroud you and keep you safe.

Hi Sparky,
Yeah I'd go.
Its not forever and if one doesn't like it we have a choice.
I think it's great to experience a different culture and lifestyle.

Hey Sparky...best of luck to you...
I think you made a good decision. The money is incredible and the people are very nice, according to my cousin who did this. He signed up for a year and said it was a good experience overall.

Yes, I have talked to several people who have done this as well. The money is good, better than I ever considered. It's really a job that offers more than I could have asked for.
Hi Sparky, I admire your decision simply because something inside you said go and you listened to that rather then to all the naysayers.
While I was traveling, I spent a lot of time in third world countries, people were shocked that a 40 year old woman was backpacking into these areas alone and I had so many people telling me places that I shouldn´t go... I knew inside myself that my decisions were right for me, and it was an amazing 3 year journey.
I understand your comment made near the beginning of the thread about finding it hard to go back. Life overseas is a different experience and lifestyle and while the US has so much to offer it´s just not the same.

Thanks Jbibiza, I was actually beginning to get comfortable here but getting lazy and feeling unproductive at the same time. Kind of mixed feeling in certain areas but this is something I ultimately want to do until I get tired of doing it.
I admire your ability as well. It's not always safe but then again, nothing is guaranteed.
Sparky55: Thanks Dana, I appreciate your support on this. Regarding the gun. They will be available if needed but carrying one or not wont be up to me to decide. I actually prefer this because I did that on my earlier trips to that region and would rather not do so again.
I know. We've had this discussion. I'm glad you're happy about not carrying one, and I'm really glad that they are available if ever, god forbid, you have need of them.
cristina: You should wait for Obama's step...please?
Obama will be in office prior to my arrival in Afghanistan and I believe the surge there will be well underway. Unfortunately, Obama is not going to be a solution as his policies are going to be no different than the outgoing admin. We are in that region until we repair what we broke.

No, it isn't, is it, Cris. He wants to help rebuild. I think thats truly admirable. Not that the money isn't good from what I've understood from others.

Hello Sparky: I just want to say that I have friends that are doing what you want to do... My friends are both in Afghasnistan to build schools and open a hospital.... and also I friends that are in the same boat of going to iran to do the same.... I give them my advice and love and a lot of hugs
So if it is in your mind and heart to go than you should do what heart is telling you to do
