No, I don't believe there is a necessity for it to be illegal. That would be tantamount to restraint, control, even oppression, and not in keeping with freedom of expression or democracy.

However, I do feel that in doing so, it would be extremely distasteful and it would, without explicitly good reason, speak volumes about the person doing so. Though, it does occur to me that nowadays there is little regard for the consequences of one's actions upon others, no taking responsibility for one's approach nor any concern for how one appears in lack of restraint, modifying one's behaviour, and serious deficit of shame/disgrace.......

Just me?

Witchaywoman: Flag burners are desperate for attention. If you ignore them, they will lose interest in flag burning.
I agree flag or Koran burners whatever are only looking for attention and reaction. Best way to treat a child throwing a tantrum, ignore them till they realise they are getting nowhere.

DaveD20: This is one of those threads where never the twain shall meet. Each side is fixed in their position. The Bob Dylan song "God on their side" comes to mind where he ponders how history will record these conflicts. The basic question he asks was who writes the history books, the winners. So in any conflict who is right, the winners - You don't hear much about the role of NATIVE americans in US history.

montemonte: I think you are right, that is the question.

The United States believes in a democracy. They tried to show China how much better it would be for their women to give them rights. We didn't force it, we didn't send our military, we didn't try to kill anyone in China to prove that democracy is a better way to lead a country. We discussed it.
And THAT is the whole problem my dear, assuming that your way of life is best for everyone. I dont think Russia is a fantastic example of how democracy is a better way to lead a country than communism, so how you would prove it I have no idea. Especially as your country has never been communist, so how would you know if it was worse, or better, or just another way of life?

It's protected by the Constitution under freedom of speech. However, my theory is that if you abhor the flag of your host country so much as to burn and desecrate it, why not get the hell out and find another place to live!

Gentlejim: Yes, burning the American flag should be a felony! Many, many men and women died to preserve our freedom and our flag is a symbol of that!

It's stretching the truth to say that all US casualties were "preserving our freedom".

Freedom has nothing to do with imperialism. And a lot of America's wars can only be described as imperialist wars of aggression.

I don't blame the troops. They had no part in the decision and they have to do what they are ordered to do. But there's no honor to be had in taking part in organized mass murder such as the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

On the contrary, I honor those with the courage to refuse.

Borders were created by men and they change with wars or deals that don't actually involve the people living in the effected areas, people just want to live with peace and yes we identify with a flag or a country because of borders but just imagine if all borders were erased and people were free to move about would they go? Some yes many no but the idea of freedom is most important and if all borders were gone then eventually there would be a balance of worth, but that would take a long long time.

How far back do you want to go in saying something is our heritage? How about no government just systems in place to keep the flow of goods and needs flowing and a judicial system that is fair and not corrupt for all peoples of the world equally? It is a fantasy but one that would make for a better planet. Our "heritage" shifts as with the sands of time. We focus on the current and forget our long histories, we are moving forward and backwards at the same time.
I say burn the bloody flag if you have a good reason, whether to stay warm or make a statement against what your or someones government is doing wrong in your eyes, that is freedom, the same freedom we fight for, it goes both ways.

go back as far as you want to....there were still clans, if you will...protecting their people and trying to provide for their people...they had their own borders...iot may have not been a state or a country but, there has always been borders of some kind or another...and for good reason...because wether you like it or not, in your utopian worldly lullaby, there are good people and bad people...i can't put any simpler than that...although it may need to be, for such a simple mind...paint it however you want to paint it...but freedom will always have to have a border....grin

I agree with what you're saying, as the world has resources at different spots, with no barriers, the strongest will just take, take, take, and ruin the planet a lot quicker than having to ask for resource consent and wait for independent consultation before they take, take, take, and wreck, wreck, wreck.
We have no true freedom.
No-one does.
We never have,
and we never will.

Kindly get your historical facts right ! Your country chose to ignore any participation in the war till a very very late stage and evryone interested in 'real history' knows why.

Propganda of misrepresented facts works both ways..whcih is why the true nature of what delayed your country's participation in that war are not bandied about as much !

And rather than get into an argument here, I suggest you make an effort to check public records at your end beyond the hype. Start from the year 1936 and go up to the year 1942. Focus on the topics of Trade & Economics.

A lesson for you in humility awaits.... !
Cheers
NB: Many many brave and courageous people died in those years, if we are unable to mourn for that tragedy...lets at least not disrespect their memory !

jlw45: mass murder in vietnam ???...are you refering to the "killing fields" ??

No, not really, but yes what happened in Cambodia was a direct consequence of the secret, illegal, and horribly evil US bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam war. So, yes, America is responsible for the killing fields. In fact the US even supported Pol Pot as he took power in Cambodia because he was opposed to North Vietnam.

But even without counting Cambodia where somewhere between 3 and 6 million people were systematically massacred, the US war against Vietnam killed several million in Vietnam proper.

And frankly the US had no business being there or killing anybody.
It was not about freedom, it was not about democracy, and it was not even about capitalism. It was about forcing US taxpayers to finance hundreds of billions of dollars worth of military goods, thereby making some industrialists very rich, and keeping taxpayers from bettering their own lives.

War is often used as a means of stimulating the economy without allowing for upward social mobility and without causing a glut of production. The wastefulness of war consumes the surplus, and war taxation gobbles up the income. Unemployment is low but people's lives don't improve.

Read the Report from Iron Mountain for a detailed study on the functions of war in society.

ttom500: In a month, the London Olympic games begin. Each country will present its flag in the open ceremonies. Then will have a flags flown over the winners of the events.

I don't see any killing in a event like the Olympics. No soldier taking the castle or hill. No impressed mass that is fearful of a military.

I do see.....a real terrorist target and a real anarchist target in the summer games. Were to make some inane ideological statement...they place 100s at risk. All because many they hate some of the flags that are at the summer games.

Don't worry. There would be something made up in a conspiracy theroy mode, just as 911. I hope nothing happens dough.
