What level of trust do you place in scientists and technologists? Are you happy with the way they have changed our lives? Are they honest in their findings, eg admitting when they are wrong?

I am very reluctant to put complete trust in anyone, whether they be professionals, 'experts' or whatever (and thank you google for your advice and support lol).

Everything comes with a grey area, and no one knows for sure whether what they espouse at a certain moment in time is 100% correct, or appropriate?

Technology and science is constantly evolving, as we know, plus with stakeholders' investments and interest to be taken into account, how much of what we are told is 'good' for us is based on humanitarian evaluation?

Interesting topic Obs, what made you bring it up? conversing

I brought it up because of my work.
I guess without scientists we wouldn't be sitting here glued to our computers. But obviously there have been some spectacular failures.

Tomas Edison said all his failures led to his success!

Einstein said one hundred people can tell you that you are wrong! But it only takes one other to prove that you were right?

But we cant take the theory out off science until the results are repeated by an independent!

There lies the failure in the man made global warming science! There are no other results backing them up, other than the climate change theories, which show the climate has changed many times in the past from one extreme to the other with little more than a cooking fire happening?

That bionic eye is interesting. Like the bionic ear it involves implanting electrodes, but they implant them in the retina, rather than the brain. And only 60 pixels at this stage.

For anything to be a fact in science it has to be repeatedly testable with the same outcome. It would be pretty hard to get it wrong and not to admit to it. wink

Scientists and technologists are modern day explorers, the equivilent to James Cook, or Magellan, they expand our horizons and give us a greater understanding of our world and universe, they fight disease, and give us hope for the future. jmobeer

good analogy justjim, and like the explorers they dont always get things just right.

Scientists are human too, they make mistakes. Some are able to say they have made a mistake, others feel they have to hide...

just like normal people

Scientist just do their jobs. They experiment, investigate, come up with theories, etc. It is those who popularise science that make a mess of it because they present theories as if they were facts. Scientists know they are theories even if they are generally accepted like Einstein's theory of special relativity. So when new data comes to light scientists will re-evaluate the theory and amend it or develop a completely new one. They know that theories only present them with a framework in which they can work, but may not necessarily be true and may need to be modified in the future. Very often you find that a few theories compete with each other, like super symmetry with other theories (I cannot recall their names) in particle science.

There was this scientist who over many years developed a theorum for something or other. World class, so much so that he won a Nobel Prize for his efforts.

And then he spent the next 4 years proving it wrong.dunno frustrated frustrated crying

Then found the error and won another Nobel Prizedunno dunno

A lot of early scientists made their discovers by accident. Newton lazing under a tree is a good example. Everyone knew all things fall down but he decided to come up for a theorem for it, just an excuse as he just was a bit laid back (pun intended).

And that guy who kept dropping things off the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa onto the heads of tourists. Polish origin but Italian name. His hat fell off one day and it went straight down pretty fast (no wind that day). Some tourist bent down to pick it up and so he dropped a brick down to stop the tourist from pinching it. "Soli mio! Thata bricka fella asa slowa asa mya hata. Ia trya morea." (I am lousy with accentslaugh ) And then worked out that if you have the same weight falling, no matter the material, it fell at the same rate.

laugh
I thought the accent was funny. But so is the science. The brick would fall faster than the hat due to the hat suffering greater air resistance. But I'm sure you knew that. professor

Had a letter written to Council years back and it was just like that. Nobody could understand what the letter was about. After having a long, long lunch (also a bit liquidy) one day, I picked it up and read as it was written. Guys were rolling around laughing at my crummy accent, but they finally understood what the guy was saying.

And yes, I do understand the relationship between weight, volume, area, mass and the effects of air resistance over falling objects. But you must realise that many hats in those days were conical. Less wind resistance.

If it had been a fez on the otherhand, it would have had a flat surface and therefore wind resistance would have made a big difference.

Just thinking further along. A fez is usually worn by Egytians. Dropping it off the Great Pyramid would have gotten it almost nowhere, just down one steprolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
