Obstinance_Works: Landing on the moon was only a consolation compared to being the first into space. The Soviet command economy always had the advantage for the same reason that planned economics are better for war.

When a nation has a very specific objective, such a winning a war, then to have absolute power of action over all means and resources available is going to help you win that war.

Any country can take this option whether it's totalitarian or democratic.

Are the Russians doing this?

or this

The first is a new planet locating space probe. Once launched it will be able to find stars with distance planet around them.

The second, is a mission that NASA began to consider 2013...to bring a astriod back to earth. Just lasso the rock and bring it back here.

Those are both new programs in the last five year. What new space program has Russia had in the same time. I know....the had a group of people doing a Mars mission with sleep control methods here on terra firma.

You all asked who won the space race. The race is still going on. Russia has not had a new space program since the Soviet Union broke up in the early 1990s. That is a fact jack......
