karanigd: well are we in space now?...
did we go back to luna (the moon, well the main one, did you know we have between 2 and 5 of them)?...both D.N.F.
A common definition of the "space race" during the 1960s was making the first moon first landing. The US is the only nation to have put a man on the moon, so it is commonly regarded that the US won the Space Race because they had Neil Armstrong as the first man on the moon.
It is important to note, however, that although the 'space race' was generally interpreted in the US as 'the race to put a man on the moon', this was a self invented definition. The Soviet Union had no manned moon landing program during the period of NASA's push to develop the Apollo missions. The act of getting to the moon was certainly a great achievement, but it was a program in itself, rather than part of a greater plan. Having attained the goal, the US public soon tired of the whole thing, and the moon project was abandoned.
On the other hand, Russia won the race to launch the first live creatures into space. Sputnik 5, also known as Korabl-Sputnik 2, was the second test flight of the Russian Vostok spacecraft. It was launched on 19 August 1960, and carried two dogs, Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats and numerous plants. The spacecraft returned to earth on August 20, and all animals were recovered safely.
Russia also put the first man in space (Yuri Gagarin 1961). They put the first satellite in space (sputnik 1-1957) and they put the first space station in space (1971). Russia also performed the first space walk and had launched the first female in space. They also were the first to land a vehicle on the moon, the Luna 2. Wile the US was socncentrating its efforts on getting man to land on the moon, the Soviet Union, in cooperation with the European Space Agency, was achieving major successes in manned orbital satellites and the study of the effects of long term space missions on the cosmonauts.

By the way what are the other moons

It took the Americans long to conquer space. Even John Glen was not not truly in space. Though going around the earth three times, he never attained orbit.
I guess the Russians got better German scientists than the Americans!

allocation of Money, not a problem in a totalitarian System! More of a problem in a Free Society!
looks like USSR is ahead in the poll so far. i suspected that was the way the rest of the world sees it
here in the united states, everybody agrees that "we won the space race" but i've never really thought so
the soviets made all the landmark achievements, which embarrassed the united states. so the united states said "oh yeah??? betcha' can't get to the moon before we can!" and just arbitrarily declared victory over the "evil empire"
but it raises some interesting questions doesn't it?
do communist societies value science more than capitalist societies do?
are war and international competition necessary in order to make leaps forward in technological advancement?
if the soviet economy hadn't collapsed and the cold war had lasted a bit longer, would we have a base on mars by now?
one thing is for sure if you ask me. in the fullness of time, historians will remember the united states for jazz music, movie stars and consumerism. that is our national legacy. the soviet union will be remembered for space exploration
Yes, and don't forget who first took picture of the other side of the moon! Funny, all Russian names.
About who won the cold war? Too easy man. Just look who is still standing and who went down for the full count. And who is getting helped up on his feet again by the victor!
Landing on the moon was only a consolation compared to being the first into space. The Soviet command economy always had the advantage for the same reason that planned economics are better for war.
When a nation has a very specific objective, such a winning a war, then to have absolute power of action over all means and resources available is going to help you win that war.
Who has landed successfully on Mars? Not once but several times.
Who has sent a nuclear powered space craft to the edge of the solar system? Cassinni
Cassinni by the way was the first of a fleet of deep solar space explorers. Had NASA gotten the budget, 11 more would have flown. But NASA also had success with the Viking program.
Who launched the Hubble? Most astropyshist today use Hubble pics for any deep space studies. Hubble has been the biggest successful deep space telescope the world has had in its history.
I have seen the Soyus capsule up close at the Air and Space Museum in Washington. That was in the mid 90s. When I did, I knew why the US had won the cold war. Why? The US was far ahead in all the key technologies....communication, computers, advanced materials.
The Russian still fly the Soyus. The US is now two generations beyond the Shuttle program. It has commericalized most of its space programs. We have a commercial program testing a vertical launch and vertical land missile. No other country in the world is doing that.
We all can have our opinion here. But if you deny these achievements of the US space programs.....you are just being spoiled sport because the Russian got whoopped in both the cold war and the space race.
I am not including the defunct Shuttle program in the post. One of the most successful manned programs to todate. What Did Russia do with its version of the Shuttle. It never made it off the ground.....
GUZMAN1: There are human-made devices on Mars, or is it a fake?
Hard to know.
The technology exists, and I do believe that they send probes to mars.
But failure, for any reason, would cause people to question the cost-worthiness of NASA.
So, in this climate of a crumbling economy, and a grumbling populace, I'm inclined to believe that, like the lunar landings, the mars images we are shown are produced in a studio somewhere. Just to make sure that the money keeps flowing in.
They'll get around to faking contact with aliens one of these days. And they'll probably do a really impressive job of it. Projecting images in the sky and all that.
I'd say Germany. German scientists working for the USA or German scientists working for the old USSR. The USSR were the first to put a man in space and the first to have a manned space station. The USA were obviously the first to put a man on the moon so I'd say it's pretty even. Nowadays, many countries are in the business of launching satellites.
But without the research and experimentation done at Peenemunde by Werner Von Braun and others for Germany, we would probably have not yet left the planet and be watching 4 channels on the tv.
