Of course, if we allow it. I think that words are the expression of our thoughts and emotions.

Why should ANYONE allow another person's words to define them in any way? If you allow a person's words to affect you, you are allowing that person to control you. I REFUSE to be controlled by anyone. Especially some idiot who has no sense & is hateful, vindictive & says things just to be snarky.

Words can break you down or make your day.

It all depends who is saying the words.

thumbs up I remember a number of teachers, scout leaders, etc... always saying that words can't hurt you, but I don't think that's true at all. We all have feelings, and we all can be hurt by what others say to or about us.

thumbs up

Eventhough we cannot control what other people will say or how they will say it, one thing I always keep in mind is that we can control what or how we react to their words. And controlling our own words is more important.

Moreover, on detective movies or movie series, I heard "you have the right to remain silent. every thing you said will be used against you!" (or something similar to that).
It tells me that mostly it is our own words that can destroy us.. So I guess, better to choose the words wisely.

Totally agree with your thoughts on this.

A couple of others have mentioned that feelings also contribute to the weight that we give words ... I agree with that as well, but I also think that sometimes we need to take a step back and gauge whether we accept or reject the words that others say to us.

That requires taking the emotions out of the equation and weighing whether there is truth to the words that are being spoken. Not always easy to do, but I think that if we did this more and practiced it, then perhaps we wouldn't get so upset sometimes or let another's words damage us (because we allow them too) and therein I think lies the difference of whether we are equipped within ourselves to withstand outside influence of others upon us.

I think of bullies and the various experiences that we go through sometimes .... some people can pull through unscathed and others are scarred and wounded.

handshake exactly. there are those who will use words to cause pain - there is no reason to use such words if one has loving intentions - whether it's love for others in a general sense of love for one in particular. My belief is that if people are conditioned to use words intended to cause pain, they need not be part of my life. There is now room for that even though I have thick skin (from politics) I don't need to allow that carp in my life. dancing

pedro27: is there a power in words?

My lords, you are impatient for the sacrifice-the blood which you seek is not congealed by the artificial terrors which surround your victim; it circulates warmly and unruffled, through the channels which God created for noble purposes. but which you are bent to destroy. for purposes so grievous. that they cry to heaven. Be yet patient! I have but a few words more to say. I am going to my cold and silent grave: my lamp of life is nearly extinguished: my race is run: the grave opens to receive me, and I sink into its bosom! I have but one request to ask at my departure from this world--it is the charity of its silence! Let no man write my epitaph: for as no man who knows my motives dare now vindicate them. let not prejudice or ignorance asperse them. Let them and me repose in obscurity and peace, and my tomb remain uninscribed, until other times, and other men, can do justice to my character; when my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written. I have done. - Robert Emmet, 19th September, 1803. He was 25. ireland

All the above is just too easy to say KIBALUV, unfortunately words can kill even if you think you are an intelligent and strong person. Not to mention the hundreds of suicides committed by teenagers exposed to a cruel behaviour over the so called social networks.

Words hold power. Child standing at street side? Car coming down road in that direction. Adult says to child do not go out in the road. Words become important at an early stage. Can they uplift you? I believe so. If you are told you look very nice today or great in that dress I know for me it adds an extra spring in my step for the evening. Even if the compliment comes from a stranger. If one is told enough times in life that they are no good and ugly I believe they soon start to feel sad. Even if they do not believe the words. Commercials on the tv work excellently due to this. Some people become pros at using words. Where would politicians be if there were no power in words?
