Hi guys, I have just finished writing my first book and being a first time author, am considering self publishing. I am trying to figure out if it is really worth the efforts to publish for kindle ... you see there are no authentic and reliable figures out there on how many kindles are there in circulation and how many people spend money to buy books for kindle ... or how much they spend on kindle books.
Please take a minute to answer this poll and help me figure out if it really is worth while investing money to publish for kindle.
No I dont. In fact, the whole concept of E-readers worries me. I was a literacy tutor for many years and I know that knowledge is passed hand to hand. Books are meant to be shared and passed on. No-one will pass along their e-reader.
I think they are good in some applications like magazines or pulp-ficton kinda stuff. I like the thought of saving trees. However I dont agree with them for anything beyond that. Good books should be held and cherished and the thoughts contained within them passed around and shared.
Thanks Venu. I am inclined to agree...but I spent 5 years working 4 hours a day to research and write this book, and if publishing for kindle will get me read and get me some money...well then thats what I need to do! But the initial investment is mind boggling and need to be sure of what most people feel about it before making that decision...

E-readers are handy for my children when on holiday and that's the only time it is actively used. Up until a few years back we would bring books along for them to read. Problem is they are worms, and the amount to bring would be ludicrous. At home it always will be paper.

Copyright on books is about 100 years. I have downloaded lots of Shakespeare, Dickens, Mark Twain, and Conan Doyle for free and enjoy reading them on my tablet PC.
If I was going to buy a book I would buy it on paper - more durable, more lendable, more portable and often cheaper too.

Thanks Guys...but WOW...87% do not own a kindly and 7% buy a book 6 months to one year...rest only download free content...so is it really worth investing something like $15,000 to publish a book for kindle?
I have a Galaxy tab with the Kindle app installed.
Take it everywhere, but more for the camera/music/internet features than the eReader..
I mostly download free book samples with a view to buying them if they look good but the price is getting prohibitive
Have recently ordered paper books online as they were cheaper than the ebook versions plus some are 'coffee table' style, full of beautiful photography, which I will enjoy more that way than on my tablet.
There is nothing like the feel of a REAL book in my hands. Plus, I like to underline & highlight passages.
I read recently of a woman who self-publised on Amazon, (but since I've been published in literary mags, anthologies, news articles, etc, wouldn't know anything about the cost of self-publishing). After only about a month, her book went viral & she got an offer from a real publisher. So, maybe Amazon is something you could look into?
Thanks guys! I am happy to see such good response and such good advice. Yes, amazon self publish is am option I had totally ignored. Now I will research it more. Free sample? Ok. Send me your mail id, and I will mail you the first chapter.
I do not own a Kindle and have no plans to buy one. There are too many sites, not only Amazon, on the internet that have free books for downloading. Those free books include books for the hand held devices like the Kindle but also audio books (YouTube among others) and there is also "Free ebooks - Project Gutenberg
I got a kobo e-reader for Christmas. I only use it at night as I like to read before I go to sleep. It has a light which makes it easy for me to see. I still like books as I do keep them as a collection and the ones on the reader I end up deleting them after I had read them.
I am 33 and I am definitely an e-reader. I am not going to buy real book unless I do not need to. I read all I need to, even novels during holiday, on my tab. E-book is available anywhere and I do not need to store read books somewhere on a bookshelf and dust every week.
I would guess that a lot of people read books on their smart phones. Not as good as an ereader because the screens are smaller but much more convenient as you carry them with you everywhere. I use a Samsung Galaxy SII and it is great. The only problem is that in bright sunlight the screen is dark and it is impossible to read so in that way a Kindle is far better. Can't fit them in the pocket of your jeans though. Graham

I was bought a Kindle as a birthday present a couple of years ago. I thought I'd hate it but I love it. So much so I bought my son one for Christmas the same year. I've since updated mine to a more advanced version.
I love the fact I can finish reading at 2am and immediately get another book. I read mainly in bed (welcome to the single life) and holding a Kindle is so much easier than managing a heavy book. I never lose my page, I can have several books on the go at the same time without my bedside being cluttered.
As to buying books....I do a bit of everything, I look for free / discounted ones but I'll also buy newly published if it's something I've been waiting for.
Of course I'll always buy certain physical books. Nothing can replace those.
Not quite sure if any of this helps the poster or not but good luck with your book :)
