Back in March, when things were becoming obvious that something was terribly wrong with my health, I had an emergency situation. Yet, I didn't go to the emergency room as I knew the cost of would be exorbitant and I couldn't face the idea of months, perhaps years, of harassing bill collecting calls, threatening letters, etc.

So I waited until the next day and a doctor accepted to see me within minutes. However, I had to pay for that doctor visit before he would see me. Subsequent doctor visits followed until it was determined that something was wrong with me. Each visit required "payment at time of service".

My first surgery in this process, at a surgical center required "payment at time of surgery".

It was frigthening and sickening during a time I was already in a high state of anxiety because I was sick and frightened.

Something is horribly wrong with all of this.

I totally agree. There is enough stress without having the fear of being able to afford it.
What would happen if you could only afford one visit and the news is bad...can you imagine the stress?

This is what happened T. I shut down my emotions to handle the stress and anxiety.

Yes, there are. We are caught between a rock and a hard place.
Our taxes used to help fund others' health needs (which I agree to), yet not being able to fund our own health care needs. It is a conundrum.

Hiya KB wave Nobody should have to endure the stress of whether they can afford heathcare and I'm glad you made it through. It's mind boggling to think that there are people who require medical attention and can't afford it. Something needs to change in the U.S. Although taxes are high in Canada, it's a small price to pay when it comes to getting life saving treatment at no cost. teddybear

American health care system is profit based, and it is one of the most complex and bureaucratic in the world. I can compared them as i have lived in different countries, and experience them also.

unfortunately the health system it is based on money only... the concept of "you get what you pay for", does not apply here, as no one control the actual costs of a procedure. it is a "cartel activity" system, as costs are whatever a hospital/doctor says...

I can not complain about the quality of American hospitals (experience that with my father), but i know how much it did cost.

not sure about "Obama deathcare" policy to answer...sounds out of reality!!

It would be nice if everyone could have free healthcare, but being realistic, that is impossible.
However, here in Spain, and many other countries, those that contribute to the state, get there free health care.
What i object to,is in certain countries, doctors and health companies just see it as a licence to print money. It gets to the stage when someone is earning a decent wage, and they still cant afford the care.It can only be greed, nothing else.

There is a man that works with me whom I have dubbed "Tony Soprano".
The last few weeks, I noticed his office mailbox would contain unsigned white envelopes some mornings.

Oddly, unsigned white envelopes, full of anonymous "gifts" have been showing up in my office mailbox.

I am a fortunate, lucky, grateful, humbled woman. flower

Yes, they should have the right to make that decision for THEMSELVES. It's NOT for the government to decide who lives or dies.

Again another skewed poll, while I agree with your sympathies about human life when you ask people's unbiased answer and then do not allow for unbiased answers on the poll it doesn't allow for true input.
