abcWOMAN: No I don't think so HotrodLarrys. Swedes have been taught to write in the British way from early years! There are spelling differences between the American English and the British English.
SoonerGal: totally agree...I've learned that even the same word has a different meaning in countries....no way of knowing all that though, guess it's just trial and error
It's true, trial and error or visiting/living. I'd say I'm somewhat familiar with your "English" too, lived and worked in Canada in my youth. I'd guess most Europeans are taught the British English.

We learn the American English through Internet!
Yes the Americans can't spell, strange because their English, as with all
I often got surprised by germans that didn't help even seeing things. But I believe Indians to be worse..only think how they treat their women! Cannot say about others...
I have always wondered, why there isn't in English an equivalent, to the Greek word "Philoxenia" whish means, love of strangers,hospitality.- Another meaning of the word is,without preconditions to invite in your house as a guest, somebody who is looking for shelter,or feed a poor human/s knocking at your door.-

tomcatwarne: Hospitality?????
According to Wiki.
Classical ethic world To the ancient Greeks, hospitality was a divine right. The host was expected to make sure the needs of his guests were seen to. The ancient Greek term xenia, or theoxenia when a god was involved, expressed this ritualized guest-friendship relation. In Greek society a person's ability to abide the laws to hospitality determined nobility and social standing. Celtic cultures Celtic societies also valued the concept of hospitality, especially in terms of protection. A host who granted a person's request for refuge was expected not only to provide food and shelter to his/her guest, but to make sure they did not come to harm while under their care.
Russians are icy as anything until you get to know them, similar story for the Ukrainians.
The Chinese aren't cold as such - alien is the better word - they can be very hospitable, but it's like they've all been lobotomised in some way. Even the imported ones we've grown here struggle to attain any dimensions to their personality.
All these expert opinions on nationalities are they back with experience? how much experience? People are good or bad in all languages; goodness or badness in any degree is not the sole domain of any one nationality.

You are wrong nationalities do have different traits or customs including demeanor. Peoples of the world do not follow modified versions of an American.
The English are sort of cold in the sense of being emotionally conservative.
The cavalier/southern/wealthy Englishman keep his emotions to himself - the stiff upper lip traditionally associated with the English. And the roundhead/northern/common Englishman has this way of talking about the most negative and dour things as though they were the most natural thing in the world - he'll even exaggerate how bad things are for the sake of laugh and he is never happier until you tell him that he is doomed. These are our two different faces of emotional conservatism.

I am not talking about traits or customs. Demeanor is another matter. How you behave with others has more to do with how you are brought up. If you take a cat(with no nationality) and slap it and hiss at it every time you see it from birth onward, it will be conditioned to act a certain way, hissing at you even though it doesn't know you. But not all cats will hiss at you. In the same way, some humans have been conditioned by environment and other factors to reject people they just met, but fortunately not all people of any given nationality are that way. We have a saying in English:"I cannot criticize my brother till I have walked in his mocasins." For you to claim that a particular nationality is inherently bad you would have to prove everyone is bad. It would easier to spit in the wind than to prove such a mistaken claim.

National characteristics are determined by a number of factors. The nurture or nature argument has been going on for a hundred years. I agree with you it is a lot nurture, but this does not stop this characteristic being ingrained into a persons psyche.
I can't speak for the cat race, but I think if you hissed at them all the time they might scratch your eyes out. Apart from that I agree with you.
