Are you referring to the Survival of the individual or survival of the species.

For both it would be counter productive as people who have Bi-polar often get themselves in to messy dangerous situations. They take more risks than most and show little remorse for their actions.

As for survival of the reproduction values, well unstable, unsecure environments are never suitable for this purpose.

jac379: Why do you think fluctuating mood, or behaviour might not have been a historical survival strategy?
In depth extreme military training gives me some of that logic, althought the explanation of all that would give me thumb cramps trying to type all that. However another thing, and this is just my opinion, is that the bipolar disorder would me much more widespread among humans than just a small percentage. Adaptive traits take many, many years to develope, and I haven't read or heard of anything in recorded history wich would require that kind of behavior. And if it was before recorded history, well that trait would be long gone by now. Hey, I could be wrong.

MrCountingStars: Well all clinical evaluations come to the conclusions that these individuals tend to have more multiple partners than the average person.

Yes my bi-polar ladyfriend had also been seeing 3 other men during that 3 months, one which I knew about, and she proclaimed it was a friend but that is just more of the lies to which you will be subjected to while dating these individuals. The worst part is that they never ever apologise. For anything. And I mean never, afterall it is always your fault!!

so,you have seen ALL Clinical Evaluations of the bi-polar Condition, and are convinced it was that causing your Woman to sleep around?wow

Of course Jac everyone comes to the table with their own set of problems.

But the problem I am describing here and the attached behaviours to dating a person with this mentality is Bi-Polar Disorder.

I have outlined the behaviour that you will be subjected to and only gave a glimpse of how it feels to be under their spell of wickedness.

My main point is that if you have problems which everyone does, they may manifest under the strain of a relationship with a Bi-polar person.

I had no ownership of this woman, so "your Woman" has no referance value.

Yes I can safely agree that every Clinical Evaluation or human behaviourist would 100% agree that A person with Bi-Polar is more prone to be involved in multiple partner relationships.

Listen every article ever written on the subject proclaims that she was not relationship material in the first place.

People should be aware of the personality type and I am just describing my experience.

Not everyone will have the same experience, but I wanted everyone to know my story and just get a minor glimpse in to what they will experience.

Now it is up to you whether you want to experience the Wonderful Highs and

Earth Shattering Lows.

This is not about the action of sleeping around but how the subject he or she will also proclaim his or her love for you.

They will go to any great lengths to hide this lie and will always make it out you are the fault. Manipulation is the weapon of choice for a Bi-Polar person.

They will make you feel so special but all the time have other intentions.

Who knows? Maybe I slept with someone else too but that is not what we are talking about!

It's the deception and little remorse they show for there actions, simply it's a close relative of multiple personality disorder but not as distinct.

Mood swings and the whole Love/Hate are the key ingredients to a relationship of this kind.

KIBALUV: I read recently where a woman told guys after several dates that she was Bipolar & they all dumped her. This poll is to find out what the general attitude is of how people feel about dating someone with a GENETIC birth defect of mental illness.

Unless some people adapt to the 24/7/365 modern lifestyle more easily than others and possibly many struggle without being diagnosed with the extremes of bipolar disorder.

I would question doubting that modern societal structure has an impact upon psychological health, given the incidence of diagnosed mental illness, never mind all those who don't get diagnosed. Just look at how widespread depression is, which is essentially a physical and emotional exhaustion. Societal structure has changed far faster than adaptive evolution could be expected to.

Maybe those who aren't inclined to Seasonal Affective Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder are the ones who wouldn't have survived as well historically than those who are genetically predisposed to them. dunno

Unless we adopt an attitude of survival of the fittest in current times and euthanise, or allow people to die off if they're not coping, we kind of have to accept that as a society we'll manage some people's difficulties. That will likely include everyday relationships.

Whilst I can appreciate that some people might not be in a good place to have a relationship, might not be in a good place to have a relationship with someone who has bipolar disorder, or choose not to have a relationship with someone on the basis of them having bipolar disorder, I have a fundamental objection to people being treated as second class citizens, whole groups of people being treated as second class citizens and specifically in the context of this thread, as being incapable, defective, or not worthy of intimate relationships.

People are more than their diagnoses, or popular (and often erroneous) beliefs about their diagnoses.

One issue I will say I have is:

The question of it been Genetic?

Now I will say I have no knowledge to the medical research of the brain scans of patients of have been diagnosed.

Now with schizo scans of the brain have shown how the disease manifests over time and how parts of the brain show an increase in UV light as to an increase in thoughts etc. on certain parts of the brain

I am not aware of this technology been used for Bi-Polar and the outcome.

Could Bi-polar be a manifest of memories from childhood or a product of ones environment, or just a way of thought.

Genetic or not? Well it has been said that children of Bi-polar are more prone to it also, this could mean heraditary influences, but could this be a mere coincidence or a product of watching how their parents interact on a daily basis, hence the environment to which a person has been brought up.

To say it is Genetic is a big call.

Since when?

I've heard of the rare psychosis Dissociative Identity Disorder being muddled up with the schizophrenias (meaning split with reality, also categorised as psychoses), but never Bipolar Disorder. confused
