This is true. Anyway, they wouldn't put the food directly on the newspaper...they had some other kind of absorbent white paper to put them in and then wrapped the whole thing in newspaper to take out. Absolutely delicious with malt vinegar, tiny bit of salt and maybe some ketchup.

Ccincy: Maybe I should try wrapping them in newspapers but would taste like old news.
(I can't find the details just yet)--somewhere in the 1950's black newsprint was mandated to be made non-toxic. This was because canaries and parakeets had been dying inordinately sooner than known life-spans (7-8 years is the lifespan of a canary, 10-20 for parakeets), as their cages were frequently lined with newsprint. {just a little trivia...} It stands to reason that in Britain the wrapping of 'station lunches' in newsprint could have prompted the change over there.
