If Atheists can celebrate Christmas without regard to the historical connotations then Valentines Day wouldn't be much different despite the vast majority being ignorant of the history posted by somebody here - polar opposite circumstances maybe but then again there's the paradox of the vehement atheist celebrating Christmas. Think of the historical figure Vlad the Impaler, a very cruel character who impaled his victims. Now cut to modern day. He's the inspiration for Dracula and Vampires. Nevermind being dark figures, they're still romanticized through popular fiction books and movies. I don't imagine florists (for instance) being that profitable throughout the year. Business is business, when the chance is there to capitalise they'll take it. If you were in business wouldn't you do the same. I think the positive of Valentine's Day is it's official recognition of how much you value your partner. Of course you don't need a special day for it, it is however nice to have imo. Doesn't mean you have to subscribe to what you hate about it.

Perhaps you're not aware that Christmas was actually a Pagan holiday/festival, celebrating winter solstice, and was hijacked by Christianity. Much the same for Valentine's Day, if you actually want to start quoting history.
I don't hate either holiday, but certainly don't celebrate the commercial aspects of them.

54xmax: I am just wondering, how much does this holiday really mean to you.
I personally think that if you do need this kind of holiday to remind you of your loved one. You are not worthy of that person anyway.
Besides, the day celebrated as we know it today, as the day of lovers and stuff, is utterly an economical, materialistic concoction for the masses in order for the merchants to sell more flowers, and leftover chocolates and sweets from Christmas time .
I show my lady - - Well when I had one, that she is special in other ways, and NOT on this day of commercialism. - - That is my take on it - - - It is the least romantic holiday, and anything done in the name of romance on the 14th of February is just an overdone cliche . . . . .
You know, Valentine/ Valentino is a funny name for a Dude ...
According to Catholic records: Priest Valentine was put to death by the establishment of Roman Emperor Claudius on February 14, 270AD... And through his death, became Saint Valentine. He married couples during a time when it was against the law to do so. Priest Valentine: A man who literally died for love... Happy Valentines Day Everyone.

Most are probably not aware yet it makes no difference.
Whether its a commercial racket or not, it would not stop me spoiling my loved one and making it a very special, romantic day. She would be romanced and surprised throughout the year, but I would want to make that day even more special for her. An excuse to pamper and spoil her even more. If she is not of the same mind, then she is not the woman I want to share my life with.

Oh... Ohh..... Ohhhhhh....
I hear music.... can you other girls hear it too.... ???
Why not a "Just Because Day"? What about doing something special for your special someone on the day when you first met or your very first date?
I'm for genuine romance the kind that comes from the heart(pardon the pon),not from marketers. What about something spontaneous not this commercialized, manufactured stuff.
My boyfriend and I celebrate the Anniversary of our first meeting on the 22nd of every month.
We can be out riding in the country side and he'll do something spontaneous such as stopping along the road side and pick me some wildflowers. He's also made me breakfast in bed as a "Just Because" and I've done the very the same for him too.
We've given one another back massages as a "Just Because". Cooked each others favorite meals as a "Just Because". To me that's what loving someone is all about.Material things are just things and have never meant anything to me cause they could never ever take the place of the man in my life.

Never do anything that has no real meaning for you and your lover ! Romantics are not dead yet, if they are pleased to celebrate Saint Valentine's Day, it's their choice...... Vive la Saint Valentin, et Vive l'amour !!!!!

It has become commercialised like so many other meaningful days. Any way I like to give frequent small presents and have lots of Valentines days, but I am going to call them St. Tomcat days

Its a special day put aside to show the one you really love how much they mean to you, even though this happens everyday, there is something magical about Valentines Day
