StandardsFirst: How important is a voice, in itself, when you rate a musician? Some listen to such monotone or just ordinary voices. I often wonder if they even KNOW they sing ordinary or even worse..or if they just don't mind that aspect of the music being less than average.
With so many kinds of music it kinda varies. I would say that if I like the tone and the colour of the voice with the music (mix) I am fine even if I don't know what is being said.

Singers, vocalists and gymnasts....
Personally, id be a big supporter of understated vocals, thats not to say bland, but not exaggerated, as in a mariah carey or a whithey houston, where the 'vocal pyrotechnics' detract from the song...
There are some great vocalists who carry a song in such a way as you would be happy to hear them sing the telephone directory, for me, aimee mann, annie haslem, gail moran, eddie reader and for male vocalists, greg lake, neil morse, ted leonard, ike willis, john wetton....there are many more, but the listed ones make the human voice a true instrument of worth in my opinion...

Wow did that song bring back some memories. I remmember the summer that albumn came out. 1983 I was working for a interesting construction company who was in the early stages of enviromental services.
