Vaccination is not full protection from becoming infected, but if some people do become infected, they are less likely to be hospitalised, have long term damage/health issues, or die.
If vaccinated people do become infected they are more likely to have mild symptoms, or be asymptomatic. Asymptomatic people are more likely to spread the disease because they don't know to quarantine.
If the disease is spread, particularly part way through reaching a herd immunity level of vaccination, there is a greater likelihood of mutations flourishing. With fewer hosts, the mutations that are more successful are the ones which propagate.
So, post-vaccination, we not only continue to protect ourselves for the time period it takes for the vaccination to be effective and reduce the chance of our own death, but we protect others who are not yet vaccinated.
It will be necessary to wear masks, socially distance and continue with precautions until enough peple are vaccinated for there to be herd immunity.
