we use it in my area quite frequently to identify our selves and where we are located at in our county. Islander and mainlanders. 
We also use yankees and homegrown. Snowbirds and natives. Some do take offence to the latter two. With that being said I would like to use a phrase I have heard from childhood "Call me anything you want just don't call me late for dinner" I will end this with a gentle reminder of the truth

We all want to be an islander! Yankees are people from up north in the states. And Snowbirds are the ones who either retire here to Florida or own two homes. One up north and winter here. I am native by birth. So I did have a chance to be anything else
