“The execution of a Malaysian drug trafficker with an intellectual disability in Singapore has rekindled the global debate around the death penalty and whether or not it should be regarded as an acceptable form of punishment in the 21st century.” (fairplanet.org, May 2022)
Currently, the Jamaican Government is debating whether it should be retained or abolished. The debate actually began years ago (2008), but was not concluded, and now that a Prosecutor is seeking the Death penalty in a current murder case, it has prompted a continuance of the debate.
In my country, it hasn’t been abolished, but it isn’t often pursued in the Law Courts. The last time it was enforced was in 1999.
If the Death Penalty is still an option for prosecution in your country, do you think that it should/should not be abolished?

phatdrummer650: By teaching that human life is sacred and that if you take another human's life it will cost you your own.
You can't teach that life is sacred by deliberately destroying it, that teaches the opposite. The death penalty teaches us that public lust for revenge is more important than human life.
Must have a twisted mentality......from the warders bringing them from the cell to the one that carries it out.....and the ones in for a gawk as spectators.....
galrads: I think the more humane option instead would be to send the guilty party to life on England or in New York city.
That is certainly more humane, but the cost to taxpayers is usually compounded by the large number of 'wards' that the State/Country has to house (feed, clothe, counsel, educate, medicate, etc).

Well, I was thinking mostly turn about fair play for England today and make it a penal colony and work camp for people like they did in Australia centuries ago. Just joking again.

It's a matter which can not be simplified with just black & white narratives ..
There are a lots of gray areas when it comes to crimes and punishments ..
It can be quite conflicting and contradictory depending on the circumstances ..
Do you think it's worthy enough to keep a "Creature" ALIVE just because it Looks Like Human But Had committed crimes like Serial killing Children And then Raping the dead bodies And eating the body parts !??
What do you think should be the ideal punishment for such crime instead of a Death Penalty ???

Have you any idea how many people given full life sentences commit suicide?

In order to even start thinking about that, one would need to know what purpose the punishment was meant to serve.
Would it be to satisfy some concept of justice that demands he suffer something equivalent to that which he has inflicted?
Should it be something that would act as an effective deterrent to others who might be considering committing a similar crime?
Should it be to make him suffer to such an extent that would satisfy the hatred and hostility of the public, so that we could get those feelings out of our systems?

I mean what do we want to achieve?
Your question pointing to the whole system of law and justice ..
What you are asking is not just only about Death Sentence but to all types of punisments .. You are asking what's the point to implementing any punishment .. What do we really want to achieve through any type of punishment ..
Is it really useful to reduce crime rates by applying punishments ?
Or punishments are nothing but to satisfy vengeance of public mentality !!
This is actually the essence of your questions ..
And then the answer should be , If you think that the present orders of punishments are not enough to serve the purpose , Just provide the better alternative first ..

I don't know what principles we should base the punishment of criminals on. But, back to the death sentence: I don't think it is just a matter of what the criminal/murderer deserves, it's also about how we, as a society, behave. To set a date for a man's death, lock him away to think about the coming event, and then finally come for him at the appointed time; it seems barbaric, which adds a bit too much tragic irony to the affair for my liking. And the way it is often carried out is even more barbaric. Electric chairs, gas chambers, a rope over a trap door; they are not just apparatus of death, they are instrument of psychological torture. It could easily be said that some people deserve to go through that, and I wouldn't disagree, but I still find it worrying that a so-called civilised society could sanction it.

Agree with mostly what you've said ..
As I've said before , crime and punishment is not something which can be easily put under any specific frame .. It's a much more complicated matter considering too many consequences co-related ..
Nothing is foolproof or flawless ..
Death Sentence is just another part of our flawed law and justice system ..
Personally I think Death Sentence should be applicable strictly only upon "Rarest of Rare" incidents depending upon the severity of the situation ..
Otherwise it's better to be avoided ..
As it's been said , "Desperate Moments Need Desperate Measures" ..
People usually don't attack others.. But if you are under attack , you should'nt hesitate to fight back ..
bodleing2: Have you any idea how many people given full life sentences commit suicide?
Agree
I'm against the death penalty but I am for a harsh lifelong punishment. No books, no tv, no computer. The guilty get a bed a toilet and a rope to hang themselves if they want to.

yep, that's "harsh" all right..., but that's actually supporting what Bod said.

If public lust for revenge or joy at seeing the death sentence being carried out were true, open public executions would have become as popular sporting events long ago. I'm all in favour of enlarging the criteria for the death penalties demanding at the very least public executions, no fees charged to attend, and televised live with no commercial breaks. Enlarge the criteria to include stupidity, crimes of economic terror waged on the poor, having hill-billy accents, wearing mullets, belonging to any Republican organization singing any country western songs in public, killing any non-white person, social predators, sechs perverts religious extremists be they Zionists and any Evangelicals; all believers in the Apocalypse or the rapture, i.e. religious nuts; NRA fanatics and members...like who actually needs any of these types to make a healthy and sane society. Really.

Now that's really extreme...(and sounds too personal) to be a pragmatic way of addressing the issue...I'm just saying...
The first death sentence historically recorded occurred in 16th Century BC Egypt where the wrongdoer, a member of nobility, was accused of magic, and ordered to take his own life. During this period non-nobility was usually killed with an ax. In the 14th Century BC, the Hittite Code also prescribed the death penalty.

Certainly no rope or anything that could help them take the easy way out.. Most are put on suicide watch to ensure their misery remains ongoing for quite some time.
