Some people have complained that threads stray off topic or are "hijacked" by people chatting to friends instead of sticking rigidly to the topic.

Which do you prefer?

I think that threads are best when they stray slightly, but mainly stay on topic. There are threads that can be created to just say whatever, rather than a good topic being lost.

I don't think one "allows" anything though...threads develop a life of their own sometimes, and the creator can't always keep it going on topic. Other times they stay on topic by nature, with just a little bit of straying...and those are the best. wine

Sometimes it is a fun thing to stray off topic depending on what the subject is and how much fun one can have with it.
Serious topics or those requesting information on experiences, etc. should at least get back to the topic if it strays off course a bit.

easy one..
Lets go back to the forum rules.
#5. This Forum is for public posts only. To email one-on-one with another member, use the "Email" button on that member's profile. The forum is not a platform to play out private arguments between members, or to expose the wrongs of others. Keep private discussions to email.

#16. Enter threads to proper category. Stay on that topic when posting

#18. Topics of threads must be clearly stated in titles. All posts within that thread must address the topic described in the title. You may discuss a dislike for a forum topic. You may NOT discuss your dislike for a forum poster or make fun of them for posting it.

How many times does it need to be said?
stray a bit is fine.
but.. people don't know how to stray just a bit and come back to topic.
but we do have some people that completely take over a thread (hijack) and couldn't care less what the topic is.. this ruins the thread.
Then they all become chit chat threads, how can a topic be discussed in this manner?

Does it really matter what the topic of the Thread is? I don't think so. The CS crowd will do as they wish with it. Some will take it serious. Some will use it as a chat room. Some will tell you, you are stupid. Hey enjoy the ride because most think the Forums Threads are just a method to introduce yourself to the women or men which ever is the case.

If this is so--Hi ladies!!! wave wave

It depends on whether or not the topic is very serious. If it is, best to stay on topic since it's probably a very sensitive subject to those participating.

But if it's just the usual fun and games, it's great to watch a thread get hijacked and see all the crazy wit and humor that comes out of it.

Allow stray, return to topic is the norm for CS Forums. It won't ever change. Attempts to change this have been tried and met with strong disapproval.professor
