kissmedeeply: Yes we are..i am from Canada and came down here to North Carolina..we are in the midst of moving back to Canada..health care system there is so much better then the US...becos in Canada with having the card (medicare)..even going to the doctor you dont have to pay a cent..
Going to the hospital for surgery for a day or for a month..year and so on..dont cost a thing...
The ambulance was free..but of course now that does cost something..
I have been pretty lucky here not needing to see a doctor..
But Canada here i come
I have lived in Spain for 7 years and same as you I am returning to the U.K. for the health system. There is no after care here as families look after their own and the cost of nursing homes is sky high, and there is no funding .At nearly 70 I want to go BEFORE anything happens!

Absolutely! I wish people would stop knocking their homeland.
pretzelman: If I immigrated to any country...it would be Germany! I love the beautiful mountains, the warm people, and the pride the German people have in themselves and their country! If I had any sense at all, I would have learned the language and gotten out of the military in Germany and stayed there.
I also love that Germany is centrally located, making it easier to visit other countries and cultures
My cousin's husband did just that. He was in the AF, married her and got a European-out and works as a civilian for the US gvmt with all the commissary privileges, etc. He learnt the language and is quite content there. He flies over every now and then to visit relatives, but that's about all.
I'm thinking about staying in Europe for a year or two and see how things develop over here. If anything, I'd only come back to be around my son or to get a place in Honolulu. The rest of it... pfffttt. For starters, I saved myself 10K in taxes this year just by getting on a plane... and after coughing up 25K in medical bills for a sports injury (20 were reimbursed) I feel like a plucked goose that's about to be shoved into the oven for roasting... time to go!

I don't think it's about knocking one's homeland, as much as it is a matter of looking out for what one wants out of life. Governments don't always govern in the best interest of the people who elected them.
lady93: I have to give our president a chance to fix the mess we were put into before I make any drastic changes like that. Especially before retirement. I would for sure go back to my home land St.John, Antigua, West Indies. Its beautiful, exotic and only 69,000 live there :) I think I would miss my pay because going there being a teacher I would not make near or even a pinch as much I make here. I maybe would have to use my business degree to get a higher paying job on the island.
Clearly in your case it makes sense to stay. The economics in many of the gorgeous places, esp. the islands, keep people from moving there or from going back. As a teacher, you're in a better situation in the US in terms of insurance than many people in the private sector. Then on second thought... Houston vs Antigua... hmmm that's tough
I love traveling very much and have felt "at home" in Italy and Germany.
Here in the U.S. I have several areas in the South I can call "home", but I don't have permanent roots anywhere (so to speak). I feel like I can pick up and emigrate anywhere in the U.S. or wherever and make myself at home.
When I was 5 my family immigrated from Scotland to the USA... I immigrated from the states to a little island off the coast of Spain 6 years ago and have never been happier... I miss the convenience of proper supermarkets and cloths shops and off course I miss my family but the lifestyle I enjoy here is worth the sacrifices!
I'm not planning on leaving my country anytime soon, but if I were to relocate someday, it would be to somewhere warm and tropical. I want sunshine, palm trees, balmy breezes and beaches to finish out my days...and not in Florida, I don't like it there.
Within the US, I actually plan on retiring to Arizona or New Mexico...and yes, I'm aware that there are no beaches in either of them. However, Mexico isn't that far away, and has plenty of them.
awesome!! thanks krisha!! i've lived in 6 different countries so far (all my father's fault)... and currently getting itchy feet again unfortunately so timely poll this, thanks scubadiva..
