doubtful that financial gain would be the reason, as it is expensive to get a divorce in the first place. Usually because the situation is untenable to live with.

Exactly. And I've had absolutely no financial gain from any of my divorces. If anything, for ten years I've been the one paying, via child support, for one of them. And I've paid for the divorces as well. Twice, I've walked away from my home and started over, and the only time I didn't was because my parents held the mortgage, and I'd been paying it and all of the bills out of my paycheck. He spent his on his car insurance and eating out while at work.
So...nope, can't say I believe women divorce for financial gain. Obviously I wanted out of each one enough to take losses.

.....Really....,not surprised at all...again same as in New Zealand as well....because here in New Zealand Woman are always considered the 'Victims' and Men are always considered the 'Abusers'
IT really amazes me when people talk about their divorces and the settlement. The men always claim that they got the shaft and women always claim they walked away without anything except child support which they don't receive. I only know of my experiences and those of my friends that I was witness to. I have yet to see a man get away without it costing him $$$ and if children are involved Child Support was always awarded. In all cases that I know of the male was the larger income earner and they usually paid for the wife's attorney fees also. Perhaps this is a result of the Attorney who claim to look out for their clients interest and in doing so run up the cost of the whole process. Even is divorces where both parties are civil to each other once an attorney get involved it gets complicated in my view.
I have yet to see a woman walk away with nothing but their personal effects or have to pay the male. If there is a male out there who experience receiving $$ from the ex-wife or even not having to pay some of there costs let us know.
My point is everyone looses in a divorce but I do think the divorce courts still favor the woman. They certainly did in my case. My first one I basically only got my personal items as we didn't have that much to begin with but I didn't get any child support even though I did win custody of our child. My second divorce only cost me $20,000 and my attorneys fees as we had no children and all my properties I owned prior to our marriage ...
I do know this prenuptials will be part of any future marriage as anyone with assets would be nuts not to have one going into a marriage.
