bestbefore: Depends where you come from I suppose.I'm British and I have a hell of a job understanding some of the broad dialects we have in this country.
Probably the English that is considered the most proper and spoken most properly is that spoken in England by the educated upper class. Then there are many dialects within the UK and in other English speaking countries. Proper English is written English. Accents, slang and colloquialisms differ in each dialect. So, I don't think you can actually say any one group 'speaks' most properly.

Not so! I was poorly educated but saw the light around 25.I went back to University and struggled for the first year.If you're determined to better your language skills, you could speak the queen's English in a very short time.Or any language you decide to learn. That's if you want to of course. However you speak has no baring on education, just on your own ability.
SAXONNUMBER1: Opinions on native English speaker's and the future of it's dominance globaly as the first language.
Well, right now it is said that English is the language of business. So it is more prominent than spanish or chinese. I can't speak to your other references since I'm in the USA.

Well also on proximity, English in the Bronx is a bit different than in England.
The English language that is spoken today is much different than 100 years ago , its also made up from many other languages , our true English language died out a long time ago

Language is part of culture and evolves as a culture evolves.
Sometimes I feel like some dinosaur as the language has evolved way past my understanding!

It all depends on what you term as true English, our original English was Anglo Saxon but that was actually a form of old German, English as spoken today has it's roots with Latin as influenced by the rise of the roman empire in southern England. English spoken today is really quite close to that of 100 years ago, but different to that spoken around Chaucer’s time (1400's) which was middle English. All languages change, the influences coming from all over the world will mould and form every day.

i love accented english i think this is proper english as it has developed and formed over 100s of years, and what is considered proper english has been forced on the population, to enusre classs warfare and domninance. That being said one needs standard english that is accent free so every one can understand people. i am from the north of england, and when i go to wolverhampton i cannot understand them some times.

yeah in a sense your correct, in the 1750s english english used to sound like american english, where we use to roll our Rs (rehtoric) now we are flat speaking that is why the english accent is ver different. You could say american english is the proper form of the enligh lanuage as it was 200 years ago.
best wishes

I am learning about the English language. The first time I flew to England they served high tea. I thought it was because we were flying at 38,000 feet.
lorax888: I hate to call the kettle black but there is several grammatical mistakes in this sentence. To tell the truth i really don't care. Language has a purpose and that is simply to convey a thought or idea. misspelled or spoke wrong is only noticed by those who understood what was meant, hence the message was conveyed.

The problem with that sentiment is that as time goes on, so the spelling and grammar gets worse, until it will be impossible to actually convey the meaning in an understandable format.
