From your choices listed i would take Led Zeppelin as best (hard)ROCK band...The Beatles as best song writers (always evolving)...much as i love early Floyd, they were more psychedelic than all out heavy rock...the other bands listed are legends of course, but i wouldnt be fussed about seeing them, save perhaps for U2, and then its more about the visuals than the music...I would however give mention to Deep Purple( great hammond and guitar interplay.)...along with zepp's stairway to heaven, smoke on the water is banned in many music shops, i hardly need to tell you why!!!!..LZ..
Leo78: Just saw AC/DC live and realised how ordinary alot of new bands are. I have tried to give a cross section of bands over the last 40-50 yrs. Wondering what you people think?
no contest...the beatles....the only band to be able to put out a best of compilation and it go to #1 on the charts, after 40 years oftheir break up...like i said, no contest....
sir douglas quintet-the rationals-spirit-love-mc5-doors- allman brothers-marshall tucker-santana-lynyrd skynyrd- the stooges- new riders of the purple sage-the rascals- alice cooper-blue oyster cult-new york dolls-aerosmith- ted nugent-montrose-the ramones-talking heads-the james gang- the list goes on ect, ect, blah, blah, many great american bands. also dig all the great canadian bands, irish, rory gallagher anyone, all the great british bands, how bout the great kroutrock bands, the list is long and there are great bands of every stripe and enjoyed for their own purpose.
For me the best rock band is such a hard call - they all have different attributes and are strong in different ways , but if there is one band that never fails to excite me (surely the only test of your 'favourite' band?) is Deep Purple.
That said, the best show I saw was Alice Cooper.... and the most 'enjoyable' show was Status Quo (for audience participation etc etc )
Horses for courses.
...ooh, and then there's Be Bop Deluxe ... ooh, and then the Stranglers ... ooh, and then The Who ...

Ocee35: I would have given Metallica, GnR's spot but that's a great list.AC/DC, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones stand out from the rest for me. Given the choice I'd go see The Rolling Stones befor other two.
I still consider Metallica metal...even though they went for a softer sound for a while.
Did someone seriously put Elton John on their list?

lushguy4you: although i ve seen a lot of rock bands live the question of makes a best rock band a hard decision in my mind.
Each one and many others offer a range of taste to head bang too, but also offer a live performance which goes towards an evenings entertainment.
Im tore between several bands But the best in all categorys would have to be Led Zep followed by Pink Floyd but i heard the eagles were great as well ? this is head banging
Pink Floyd album the wall awesome so many great rock bands of the 70's still out there and famous
Guess it depends on how you look at it...... Money.........AC/DC....the "avg" band made over $440million.....3rd place....how's that for avg?
Guess it depends on what you think rock is......I wouldn't count U2.....the biggest earners, but would count the Stones....earning between U2 and AC/DC.
For me.....who has LOTS of good songs? Led Zep is the best by far for me.....since the Beatles don't make my rock list......and the Stones would be next......then maybe CCR or the Eagles
