You have to remember that the obeying part goes both ways in the wedding vows, not just to the woman. So are you going to obey the woman you marry? I doubt it. So why should we as women be forced to obey a man? I don’t have anything like "if you want obedience get a pet" in my profile, but the only people that should have to obey anybody should be children, and that is only for their own safety and security.

If I promise to 'Love, honor and obey',the old style words, I would understand that to be a meaning of 'I will keep my word - the vows that I make to you are true in my heart'.
Id never intepret that as 'I promise to do every thing you tell me to do.'
Obey - is more to do with wanting to be true to yourself, your words, to obey your heart.
So, since people are allowed to write their own vows, Id go for:
"I will Love, Honor and keep the promises I make to you from my heart."
And of course, Id expect the bride groom to make exactly the same commitment!
If I promise to 'Love, honor and obey',the old style words, I would understand that to be a meaning of 'I will keep my word - the vows that I make to you are true in my heart'.

I used to be a pastor and to be honest, the words in that vow mean nothing at all. If the vow did mean anything, there wouldn't be the amount of divorces that there are, not that I care anymore.
