My last couple of years in the Coast Guard I was an aircraft mechanic and a certified EMT. To fly certain SAR* missions, I needed the EMT certification. At one point we tried getting someone to come on the station and do the 30 hours of class time for the Airframe/Powerplant license. Most of us had the 18 months of practical to qualify but couldn't get enough people to make it worth getting someone to do the class.
I kept the EMT Cert for about 8 years after I left the Coast Guard just so I could teach the First Aid Merit Badge to the Scouts in the Boy Scout troop I was an Assistant Scoutmaster for. After a while it got where I couldn't afford to keep it.
At one point in my first marriage, my wife tried getting me to go to school for my Airframe/Powerplant license. The problem with this was that I would have to quit working for about 18 months as the school would have been a full time deal. With a family to support, there was no way I could do it.
