biggles90000: Right who do you think who is the top speical forces in the world who deal in counter terrorism operation.
FFL are not really Special Forces in that they are a hardened self contained regular military force like the Marines. Spetznatz can mean different things and encompass many specialties so which ones you refer to would have to be described as they can be anything from conscripts building a house for a refugee or a fat guy handing an envelope to a person in a foreign city to a special ops team taking out a terrorist cell.

With all due respect to la Legion Etranger, both from their records and from personal experiences, they are not quite considered by the French as 'Special Forces'; they are so considered by virtually all other Special Forces; I would hope that it their collective opinion and and rating that would prevail, but the one single unit that France does recognize as its premier elite special force is not on your list. Most other such forces would object to their exclusion. That very special force is the Premier Regiment de Parachutists d'Infanterie de Marine, aka "Rip-em" from the acronym. They are a combination of the English SAS, the SBS and the Royal Commandos. It is often rumoured that many of its recruits are ex-Spetsnaz, ex-Legionnaires and ex-German KSK,(Die Kommando Spezialkraft; the French have a 'thing' about hiring foreign soldiers.) Many of the elite forces of Europe also consider the Russian Spetsnaz as 'second best',ie. basically, just as good, almost; it's a 'national thing'. The Spetsnaz are certainly feared the most in the Middle East from their very secretive ops there against some of the terror groups and certain individuals. Certainly, they have earned very high praises from the both the American and Israeli intelligence forces for the sheer terror of swift reprisals from all the factions.Spetsnaz Forces have a reputation of being the most ruthless of the services. The German KSK are not widely known and have had virtually no publicity. Germany seems to prefer it that way...Many of these have been working together very quietly for some years now, since the oil for food embargo with Iraq, all over the world as have many ex agents and soldiers that made up the Stasi of old East Germany for many of the terror groups. On another note, about 'joint operations', I'd love to see much more 'war games' integrating the world's elite special forces and a very old European tradition that unfortunately ended with the First World War, namely the stationing of elite regiments in other countries and cities. I would like to see that several hundred year old custom revived. Not only does it allow for huge good-will ops but helps bring us closer on a more personal basis.

The French Foreign Legion have there own commando unit to act against terrorism i think.
In my opinion, they are the best trained, the most professional and the most called-upon special forces in the world.
And Im proud of them.
They seem very good alright. But specail forces are very covert about their operation so we can't really compare them I don't think. We don't hear about 90% of what each countries special forces do.
I wouldnt laugh at the Irish Rangers the well sought after in the protection roll the were saying that there in the top five best markmen in europe at the moment.

Thats very true, SS.
I could only base my opinion on what I know of the subject. I understand that at times even the USA have called on the services of the SAS to help out.
I salute any member of a special force, who conducts extremely dangerous and courageous missions on behalf of their country or world peace in general.
Thank you Leigh for the links...it was nice to see; many nice memories and even some photos from our training in French Guiana...the best of the links for me, was The Best Elite Troops In The World...just great to remember some of them... One common feeling among all of the ones I met was "We all hope to God that we never have to meet in battle"...

I voted SAS out of this list as I have experience with working with them and some of the others whilst I was serving. Unlike other SF they are unassuming and quiet and just go about their day jobs... But out of all of them I would most likely say the SBS as unlike the SAS they get one shot at getting in and if they fail thats it...
Also SBS SAS they achieve what they achieve with a small unit unlike some SF who turn up with Tanks Gunships and make a lot of noise then get lost until the SBS/SAS Trooper points them in the right direction... normally after he's finished the job...
But to all of them Kudo's in getting into there...
