Brazil, India, and most of Europe and even Middle east and Russia are doing the exact same and massive investments on high speed trains is one of the main strategies helping countries economy and strengthening abilities to compete because of fast and cheaper and more realiable transportation generally.

Only in America along side with most african countries and some eastern european countries these necessary investments are not happening massivley enough and this is a great shame I beleive.

America have been the leading economy of this planet and America can still get back on track and competting easily with China and so on but what a bout Republicans? Will Republicans EVER become able to care a bout their own country? When will an even greater numbers of americans really rejecting this dark ideology of the GOP and starting to care more a bout the country that way and start looking toward other countries and learning a bout how to acheive more prosperity and modernising America and it,s infrastructur?

In a recent CNN poll, 56% of Americans stated that they believe the U.S. government poses an immediate threat to individual rights and freedoms. 56% is a slim majority, but it is a majority.

A majority of Americans expressing that sort of distrust in our day and age is almost unbelievable, but in the days when wiser men ruled our nation it was commonplace. Our very first President, George Washington, said “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” George was clearly a man who believed that the government posed a threat to individual rights and freedoms.

Thomas Jefferson, the most brilliant President in American history, stated “When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.” That certainly appears to be an apt description of the current state of affairs in our once great nation.

Thomas Paine, one of the most eloquent founders of the revolution, wrote “When the government fears the people, it is liberty. When the people fear the government, it is tyranny.” Perhaps 56% is the turning point where we return from tyranny to liberty.

Responses were split across party lines, but far less than I would expect. In addition to overwhelming numbers of Republicans and independents, 37% of Democrats agreed that the government can now be considered a thread to the rights and freedoms of ordinary Americans. These are the same Democrats who voted for big government less than two years ago. Could it be that their love affair with statism is on the rocks?

katt1017: The United States does not NEED high-speed rail. The layout of the country does not make it practical or economically feasible in most areas. I think you will find most states would agree with Florida that the LOCAL SHARE of the cost would be so high as to be an EXCESSIVE BURDEN ON TAX PAYERS. The numbers just don’t work Stevie. Cook the books all you want. Post what ever stupid name calling you want. It is not going to change the simple fact that in almost every market high-speed rail is a boondoggle.

Let’s look at reality Stevie. I know the very idea of reality is a terrifying thing for you but try anyway. Let’s say that a rich Democrat can save one hour on his trip from point A to Point B. He has his choice of flying first class at the expense of his employer or the taxpayers if he is an elected official or, riding the train with, “the common people”. You know, common people like Rose and I. The sort you liberals claim to love but treat with such contempt when we don’t do as you demand of us. Why is young Mr. Gotbucks going to change his ways and go by rail?

While there are a very few markets that could benefit from high-speed passenger service it is not the be all and end all it’s backers like to make it out to be. If our major cities were as close together as Europe’s it would make more sense. They are not so it is not economically sensible in the USA.

Had GM and others not conspired to destroy the rail systems in major cities starting in the 1920s it might be more practical but unless you have a time machine that “train” has already left the station.



This country needs work on the rail system. It needs work on the freight system. Our roads are not being beat to pieces by passenger cars. They are being beat to death by tractor-trailers hauling freight which could be shipped much more efficiently by rail.

That’s not going to happen though. The rail freight industry does not have the political clout that the trucking industry and the Teamsters have. Mr. Obama will not bite the hand that feeds him, no politician will do that. Screw efficiency, we’re talking about political contributions here. Efficiency be dammed, Obama wants the cash for his 2012 campaign! The hell with the American taxpayers, Obama wants the loot in his pocket.

Sadly, this is all going to be lost on you. You will not address anything I brought up and will instead post nonsense about the Kotch Brothers and your standard response to Rose and I , “THEY don’t even like you”.Look out! Big Billy Goat Gruff is crossing your bridge!
