This actually happened in Gozo?! Frankly I'm amazed mate, Gozitans are on the whole still on the extreme side of superstitious and religious beliefs after all.
How many teams won a European Cup final after being 1-0 down and outplayed the whole game, having the opposition hit the post 3 times, and then scoring 2 scrappy goals in the final minutes of the game?
How many teams then won the European Cup again because an opposing player slipped while taking a penalty kick?
Yes, Manchester United are a great team, but man, lady luck does love you as well!
Oh, I forgot to add, Greece as a national team already managed to pull of a huge upset in the Euros a few years ago, so historical precedent favours you as well
I didn't mean to disrespect your team no worries :)
Actually, since Roma aren't participating in the Champions League this year I usually find myself sympathizing for the underdogs when I'm watching any particular match.
I always enjoy it when a team that doesn't have super budgets manages to pull of a result against one of the giants
What America does is no different from what other nations did in their heyday. A strong nation will always bring to bear its financial, military and cultural influence on its immdediate neighbours. Due to the increase in communications technology, this influence is spread around the globe nowadays.
Moral issues aside, the American government would have to be naff not to do so, as that is the way of the world.
Once America is no longer a superpower, other nations will rise in their place and the process will go on and on. It's human nature nothing more.
Well enjoy that one off night of incredible United luck mate. 5 of the 7 goals hit the post before bouncing in, plus we were lacking 5 key players in that match.
I know these sound like silly excuses and nothing can cancel that result, we just had the bad luck of reserving our worst game of the decade for that night. Just to put things in perspective, in that same season Roma trashed Inter 6-2 in the Coppa Italia Final, and finished runners up in the league, and this despite having a fraction of Inter's budget at their disposal.
Just remember that a couple of weeks before, Roma had beaten United quite easily in Rome
Oh by the way, at least Roma didn't take nearly a decade to go past the Champions League group stage like United did. Remember the trashings you used to get in the 90's whenever you met the likes of Barcelona, or the 4 goals 'mighty' Gotheborg put past you?
Well no direspect intended but from the teams that came as runners up in the groups, Olimpiakos and CSKA Moscow are, at least on paper, the 2 weakest sides.
Of course, once on the pitch anything can happen, but if I was a Man. Utd. fan, I'd choose one of those 2 sides to face in the knockouts instead of the others.
Yes in the recent past Inter have been dominant in Italy (but still can't find their way in Europe!). At least, if there's an Italian team that has put up a brave fight against you these past few years, and won a good share of our direct encounters too, it's Roma!
I think that sadly is part of the human pyshcological makeup, and extends even to many other animals in the mammals family.
Take for example a child, why does a newborn develop a deep bond with its mother? It's because the mother feeds it and cares for it.
A child who is raised by surrogate parents will not have the same bond of love to its mother most of the time (ok, there are exceptions to this rule).
Now in a marriage there are no blood ties, just that very difficult to fathom feeling called 'love', which is more often than not simple chemical lust, and once that wears off, the grudges and grumbling start to surface.
Take a look at many couples who have been married for most of their life. Sure, they still love each other, but they'll spend as much time fighting each other as being loving.
You sure chose the easiest draw for your Manchester United there!
Jokes apart, the only team I'd be worried of facing in the Champions League is Milan. Somehow, no matter how terribly they are faring in their domestic league, they always manage to give a 100% performance in the Champions League.
I don't know if you ever played a computer game called 'Football Manager'? I used to 'manage' Wanderers in the game once, managed to beat Liverpool in it as well. Oh well, the joy of computer games!
Er, you mean one of the richest? I remember back in the 80's (I know it shows I'm becoming an old fart now!) in the pre-Alex Ferguson days, United used to struggle to get in the top half of the table.
I hope they get up to the Premier soon. They had an awesome team back in the late 90's, pity about that chairman who erm....fiddled around with the finances and ruined everything.
Well this season I'm casting a sympathetic eye towards Liverpool, since there's a Roma favourite playing for them now, Alberto Aquilani. I hope his Anfield career is less injury plagued than his years at Roma.
