We can. I worked in an abbattoir which slaughtered 8000 sheep/day for the middle eastern market. Every single sheep was blessed and then had its throat cut by a muslim who did so whilst facing mecca. Still leaves the issue of paying our labour rates for processing though.
I don't know if there's really a cost effective way to improve live export but indeed this has been going on for years. I think it could have been phased out by now, giving people who depend on the industry time to diversify. As it is, I don't think they actually plan to prohibit export indefinetly, just until they can improve slaughter practices and the cruelty of the transport practice isn't actually at question. And again, wouldn't this all be a matter for the foreign ministry to fix ? or dept. of ag and fisheries?
I think that the countries we export to have large populations and not much space for grazing. That's why they buy from over seas. Beef exported to Malaysia is generally sold/slaughtered a lot younger than it is here so the shipments on hold can't really be sold in Australia for another year or 2 yet and presumably our market is catered for so we don't actually need any more beef here. And if we slaughter it here then try to export it it's to expensive for the Malaysian market.
I think it's a poorly thought out stunt designed to please green voters. This government has pulled heaps of them. It's destroyed the livelyhood of many beef exporters without compensation and it should be the governments responsibility to ensure the propper treatment of the animals. Afterall, what can a QLD beef farmer do about slaughter practices in a different country? And they've had nearly 4 years to do something about it.
Always fun to have a serious debate here . . . So without getting anyone banned, what's anyones take on the bann on live beef export for one thing and what do you think the future holds for the current government?
Interesting stuff to say the least. Its also in our nature to not do certain things. Ya know the rate of extinction is about as high now as it has ever been in the history of the world? That's a bit scary when you think about it. It's mostly because of habitat destruction, introduced pests and stuff.
I'm ok ! trust you are also well? Absolutley fricking sweltering out here. The AC is just not keeping up but I am indeed keeping my hands busy. Playing at a flood victim benefit concert tomorrow !
I'm a single parent of 2 teenage boys these days and have a full time job and do I have time to get involved with someone? Also playing in the band most weekends.
I smoke and although I'm trying to quit, I wouldn't expect a non smoker to go out with me. If I'm searching through profiles to see if there's anyone I might like to get to know better I always choose smokers and it unnerves me when I get contacted by non smokers.
