(I just logged on, so I need to read back...I have to work throughout the Christmas period)
I agree, the council is made up of theological experts and ecclesiastical dignitaries , which leads to preconceived thinking. Therefore you get a wide range of religious views based on notions that are already known. Rather than ( borrowing a term from our American cousins) taking a ball from left field.
Now I need to read back here, and I am on limited time. It's Christmas Eve here and I am going out for drinks shortly, so I may have to return to read your other comments.
Whilst we all have a brain, I believe the surprising bit is how differently they DO in fact work. Which is what gives us the ability to think from a different perspective. Recently I was reading about research into neural perspectives and the differences can be stunningly different.
Forums are brilliant to add to our current perspectives, helping us see things from another perspective and therefore add to what our preconceived ideas are based on our information at hand. "God" could simply be what we have no understanding of, the unknown.
I am sure we could do something with the safari gear... Add a certain Australian charm to it. Then of course, we could sing songs ... you know, like 'Australia Zoo' by the Wiggles
Au contrare, if I was truly uninterested, I would not have responded. It was simply early in the morning for me and the brevity was a reflection of my need to get to work.
I believe Russell put it best...
" The real question is :Is there anything we can think of which, by mere fact that we can think of it , is shown to exist outside our thought? Every philosopher would like to say yes, because a philosopher's job is to find out things about the world by thinking rather than observing. If yes is the right answer, there is a bridge from pure thought to things. If not, not. "
Hello Daggy, if I die from an elephant death... I am sure there will be an interesting epitaph. And ... let's face it... I will only do it once.
I went to New Zealand a few months ago, and I only spent a week there... Rotorua and Waitomo ... it's spectacularly beautiful. Lots of bushwalking and no snakes... it's a win/win.
Thank you for the flowers, Boban... Christmas is ever so close, and there is nothing more magic than watching man look out for his fellow man... You usually see it in the face of adversity, it's nice when it's simply a time of year that reminds him.
While I do not dispute that people have beliefs... I can see the beauty, the intrigue, the intricacy of the world around me. I understand that there are things that have not been explained, and certainly will not be explained in my time... but I don't believe I need to sit on an ecumenical council to explain those things either.
Interesting choice of topic... I hope it brings you the answers you search for.
I agree, and I have been very negligent with googling anything about it. I am letting my drinking friend do all of the research. I have relied on him once or twice on trips before, and he was never led me astray... well not intentionally.
So... I won't make the papers? Phooey... What's a girl got to do to lead an interesting life??!!
I promise to wear a houndstooth cap and carry a large magnifying glass to look for clues!
Fortunately my sister has been there before... but I already have plans to leave her at the motel the first day, so I can go and get measured for clothes. It will be my little adventure. Seriously??! What's the worst that can happen?? I might make the papers as that Australian tourist that went missing in Thailand. That's kinda exciting.
I re-established contact with an Aunt this year who I had lost contact with many years ago. I have invited her to my place a few times for lunch, and to my father's 70th. She is so tickled that I invite her to everything, she keeps buying me elephants. She says she sees a sadness in me, which is not like me at all... I think she just catches me being wistful at times. It's very sweet of her to inundate me with elephants though...I have elephant trinkets to wear, on my kitchen window sill, in my lounge room, and in this room too. ( I should be careful about turning my lights out... they might be breeding)
It seems so long ago, until you mentioned Daisy ... I had quite forgotten. Although there really is only a plaque there now. Everything has gone. I have a friend who worked for South Australian rail for awhile, who filled me in.
Ooldea doesn't hold as much interest for me as the Flinders Ranges. My parents took me back when I was about 7... I got out of the car and passed out from the heat. I am a true South Australian.
Thank you, Serene. I am going to try to get away for a weekend before then... I have a friend who wants me to go drinking in Queensland in February. I might try to do that before I go to Thailand. Any excuse for a night out .
Con artists... um, what exactly should I be on the look out for?
They always say there is a silver lining... and it seems for you it's a sum of experiences. Those memories are worth more than any material possessions .
Well ... I really am quite unsure of the details... I let my sister organise it all. I just agreed to turn up and join them. Her friends would like me there... It will be nice to go to Phi Phi Island, to do a Thai Cooking Course, to have some clothes made by a tailor... but mostly for me, it will be that special moment meeting an elephant.
um... I think I might be a tad obsessed with them.. I have a few lying around my home. I was given another stuffed elephant at my Christmas party last weekend. I mentioned to my Uncle that a man would be insane to get involved with me, he would experience 'trunk envy' with the elephants I have in my bedroom.
You have experienced places that I have only dreamed about... but ... nothing is holding me back from following in your footsteps.
I have a friend who says I must go to Darwin... he says it's an experience that I should not miss in life. So... it's also on my list of things to do. I did make it to Cairns this year, Brisbane and Rotorua ... (Notice I refer to Rotorua like it's in another state of Australia )
I have to admit I like the US too... I was there twice in 2009... Louisiana/Texas in April and Wyoming/Washington/Oregon in August. It's nice being away from home, but still being sure of what you are eating ( mostly).
My next holiday is in March... In fact, I just paid for the trip in it's entirety today... Thailand. It's time to meet an elephant.
I think it's disrespectful to use someone's photos for a purpose other than they were intended. However, this is the internet and the practice seems prevalent.
RE: music you like....AGAIN... :-D
