I'm refraining from making more specific comments because the info you gave is very limited. How long and how well you 've known each other and where is he coming from relationship wise.
When you look at the specifics and see other more grave and urgent issues such as political persecution of and by certain groups, lack of adequate food and water, or medical care, high rate of illiteracy, then , you are able to put into proper perspective cultural discrimination of women.
There are too many to mention names, but they all have a common denominator. They found their true calling in life and have contributed passion and talent to enrich our lives.
Men are also in their own respect. Look at how many have died at war, or how many are in jail, or how many loose their children in divorce. Also hard physical labor.
You meet someone whom you admire, you stop the friendship because of misunderstanding and pride mostly, and then one day you realize they're gone from CS.
