I too read and do those jokes .This was why my friends and I started this conversation .After I admitted I wouldn't tell a certain joke to a certain person unless I knew them enough to know they wont react badly towards the joke .


As I said to my friend earlier about Icelandic terrorists, gang attire isnt what is feared *per se*. It's the common denominator. If gang members all wore lungi we'd probaly run away from that.

I'm not saying it's right to look askance at someone because they are Arab or Muslim or black--but it is the reality that this common denominator exists, and people outside those groups should not be the only ones held responsible for their behaviors. Elders, leaders, etc within the group need to take the groups back from the thugs--that is what Cosby is advocating .

The US president has said police acted "stupidly" when they arrested a black Harvard scholar outside his own home.

Prof Henry Louis Gates was held last week in Cambridge, Massachusetts, home to the top university where he teaches.

Barack Obama said the US had a long history of African-Americans being disproportionately stopped by police.

Officers were called to Prof Gates's house after a woman reported seeing two black males - the professor and his driver - trying to force entry.

Although the exact facts of the incident are disputed, Prof Gates was arrested outside his home after providing the officer with identification.

Mr Obama said: "I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry.

"Number two... the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home."

An initial disorderly conduct charge was dropped and Cambridge police called the arrest "regrettable and unfortunate".

'Rogue policeman'

Mr Obama said federal officials should work with local police to "improve policing techniques so that we're eliminating potential bias".

He said that when he was in the Illinois state legislature, he had worked towards a racial profiling bill because there was indisputable evidence that African-Americans and Hispanics were being stopped disproportionately.

"And that is a sign, an example of how race remains a factor in the society," he said.

Prof Gates has said he was "outraged" by the arrest and called the officer, Sgt James Crowley, a "rogue policeman". Sgt Crowley has refused to apologise.

During the confrontation between the two men, the 58-year-old professor reportedly said: "This is what happens to black men in America."

His lawyer said Prof Gates had just returned from a trip overseas and, upon arriving at the property with a driver, found his front door jammed and had to force it open.

By the time police arrived at the house, he and the driver had managed to get inside the property.

According to police, Prof Gates shouted at the officer and accused him of racial bias.

Bill Cosby has a lot to say about this as well and one thing he says is that the black community needs to start speaking out against thsoe within it who make the good slice of the population look bad because the extreme slice gets all the coverage .

This came up in conversation earlier with some friends of mine and Id like to hear your views .


We'd have to be blind and stupid to never notice race. People can still see individuals as well as their race and respond in an appropriate manner. And denying the race is denying the person as an individual. Race is a large part of who we are, and people shold be able to feel good about where they come from, racially, ethnically, whatever.

In my opinion what you do and how you respond to people--whatever their race--is a determining factor, not that you noticed they have a different skin color. In certain instances I am loathe to criticise people who engage in some sort of 'profiling' - at least criticize them 'in a blanket' sense. Let's be realistic - on a certain level it has nothing to do with race. If people over the years were instigating and performing terrorist acts, and they all happened to be from Iceland, we'd all be looking suspiciously at people whose last name was their father's first name. I also beleive what many people don't realise is that often it is the clothes and attitudes that people are afraid of, not the skin color. I know if I saw a menacing looking white guy walking towards me, his skin color would be of no comfort at all .

So how do you rate your city, country, part of the world ?

Your poor ma I mind I sent Con to school only to have him show back up at the door an hour later saying the school was closed due to flooding .Glasgow is that used to the rain we couldn't tell the difference


Iv never actually seen anyone being murdered ,but I have seen an overdosed junkie dead under a bridge .We poked it like we would a dead cat .Me and 3 friends had to pass a bridge to go to school ,not a large bridge ,the burn was like ankle deep but there floating in the water was a baby with a nappy on .Never walked that bridge since, now I think about it .

My class in primary school got lice .2 weeks we had to wear Calamine lotion and Nit shampoo .The smell makes me get goose bumps till this day .We never did the shave off ,but my gran did a few times .Told us to stop complaining about a smell ,try having a bald head in winter

Does anyone remember tea cozies ? My sister was mad about the 'kettle hat' and pulled it off when my ma was boiling the kettle .The kettle tipped all over me and I got flung in a cold shower .Still have some scarring today .Whistle kettles are what I use now ,although the noise drives me potty

Iv spent a lot of time with Family these past 2 weeks ,and all Iv heard is stories from when my Daddy was a boy or when I was a wee lass .My relatives think wool gathering is a sin without a tod ,so the drinks were passed freely and they stayed up till the wee hours telling us stories .


So ,my question to you guys is ,whats your story ? how far back do your memories go and whats your earliest ?
