I don't know. I think there are other countries, however, where this is not necessarily true and women would welcome such a device. I think thinking needs to change, perception needs to change. Look at Turkey and how much Attaturk changed the thinking of Turks, how his vision brought them into the 20th century and gave freedom and equality to women. Thinking and perception can be changed.

Parenting

Not permanent sterilization, btw, but temporary. And the device is removed when the woman is in a good place to get pregnant and care for a child?

Parenting

Okay, so it is a worldwide problem. What if we had a magic pill or a device which could easily be inserted into a woman's arm to keep her from getting pregnant? What if we administered that device around the world, just like we administer vacinations?

Parenting

Yes, this is a very good point. We have no problem applying restrictions on 'human rights' when it comes to adoptive parents--but we do not apply any restrictions on just anybody going out and getting pregnant and bringing into the world a child they cannot or have no inclination to care for. Why? It doesn't make sense.

Parenting

Why is it against human rights? In the States, boys are allowed to go to war, even drafted, before they are old enough to drink. People must reach a certain age to drive or marry. People are forced to do drug testing to get certain jobs. Why are there regulations for other human rights but not for reproduction? Isn't it just a matter of perception? Maybe we need to have a different perception of this issue and how we deal with human rights.

Parenting

But what about people having babies when they can't afford to take care of them, aside from the fact of emotional and mental support and nurturing of the child?

Friendship

How do you know when a friend is a real friend and not just a virtual friend or a casual friend or temporary, or whatever? What makes a friend a real friend?

Parenting

Okay, well just hypothetically. There is some kind of device that can be implanted into (I think it's the arm) a girl's arm that prevents here from getting pregnant. This device does exist. It doesn't intefere with anything else. Say, it was automatically implanted into all girls' arms when they reach puberty--just like we give innoculations to children to prevent disease. Then, after they have completed some education and reached a certain age, had psychological testing, etc. the device would be removed when they were ready to have a child. Something similar could be done to males, if we have the technology.

I realize this is not PC, but it is hypothetical.

Really, why do we consider reproduction sacrosanct, when allowing it to be completely free causes so many problems and so much suffering?

Parenting

Go for it!!head banger applause

Parenting

Yes, and everybody is being very politically correct!

Friendship

Yes, I think it is a problem a lot of people have nowadays, being so busy with work it's easier to connect with friends on line--used to be the telephone, I think. But, I agree with you, in person meetings are the best.

RE: what do you think?

I agree that you need to talk it all out, openly and frankly. If he doesn't want to do that or doesn't give answers that make you feel comfortable and satisfied, I'd say move on too. It really does look like things have changed for him--someone who loves you would make much over effort than you are describing--August! That's almost a year. Why are you being so patient?

Friendship

Thank youblushing kiss

Friendship

Yea, I agree. I've got about 3 or 4 people I consider real friends, people who have been around for years and weathered some storms with me and in the friendship too, at least one of them, ha ha.

Thanks for replying to the thread. You're a gem.hug

However, the alternative is that they live out their lives in foster care or institutions. I suppose the idea is that at least adoption gives them a chance.

Parenting

you certainly have a good point there--and yes I am aware of it; i've looked into many aspects of adoption...

Parenting

Why do we only protect adopted children from possible bad parenting?

Parenting

Just as a note, if you want to be an adoptive parent, you have to pass all these tests and more. Does that change your perception of the question?

Parenting

Sometimes people say, "Some people shouldn't be allowed to have kids." Now, most of us would say that we live in a free society and the government can't tell people whether or not they can have kids.

But, if you were in charge, honestly, would there be controls on people having kids?

Like minimum age?

Education?

Would there be classes in parenting you have to pass before you're allowed to have kids?

Would people have to take a psychological and/or stress test before they could have kids?

Would blind, deaf, or mentally handicapped people be allowed to have kids?

Would people have to prove they could support the kid before they got pregnant?

And with any of these regulations, how would you enforce them?

Friendship

I saw a news piece today about how many hundreds of thousand of people are using FaceBook to connect with friends. Also, here on CS and other sites, people are making ‘friends’ with people they have not or may never meet in person. Makes you wonder what friendship is.

What does it mean to be a friend?

Has friendship changed in the recent past; that is, is it different than it used to be?

How do you choose someone to be a friend? Do you have criteria to be met for someone to be your friend?

Is it OK to have someone as a friend because that person can also be useful to you?

Do your friends affect your perspective on life, your decisions, your morals and values?

RE: Favourite place on earth - and why

I think that's a reality of modern life; in older times, people could count on things staying the same pretty much throughout their lifetime but that doesn't seem to be the way it is anymore. sigh
