Not stupid at all! And very interesting. I'm just not agreeing with you--that's all. I'm not a spiritual person. Wish I could be, but I'm not. tip hat beer

Okay--I am a bit thick, but I'm trying. So, this is mainly a religious/spiritual philosophy you have in response to my question about the body-mind connection? The body is just a vessel--to transport the soul from plane to plane? Am I getting it? And the purpose of life is to work out karma? I do agree that we are all energy, and nothing but energy...don't know about the rest. Thanks. beer

Narcissism

Yep. Men's profiles tend to be very specific as to what is wanted...very unrealistic at times, as, I'm sure, are women's. I'm upfront about it in mine: I know my 'ideal' doesn't exist, and I'm willing to give anyone who seems compatible on some level a chance.

Some or all of us think we have a type--a physical type we like, or a personality type we like. But, we could be wrong about that. Also, we want everything...like complete happiness and fulfillment is really possible. I think our contemporary society teaches us to believe total happiness is not only possible, but required in all things, and you don't have to make it happen, it just is given to you, by and individual or by society.

Good post.cheers

Narcissism

Well not the demise. There are too many people already, I think, overpopulation. So if people have less children, that's okay with me. But, it is sad that so many people are alone. I'm not crazy about it myself, though it will do for now. But, looking toward the future...well, I hope it isn't going to be permanent. sigh

RE: Personality types...?

This one in particular--most important!!laugh laugh

RE: Personality types...?

I agree. Interesting thread. Thanks.thumbs up

Narcissism

Does contemporary society encourage narcissism—self love to the point of self-centeredness--?

It seems like, if we compare ourselves to earlier societies, people did not expect so much personal ‘fulfilment’ and easy gratification of all our desires and expectations.

I’ve only been looking at single sites for a few months, but I’m feeling like, wow, there are so many lonely, single people out there. Why are so many of us on our own? Is it because of high expectations and low output? That is, we expect so much from others but are not willing to give that much in compromising, cooperation, adjustment, and so on?

Is this a trend of contemporary society and will it continue so that in a few decades, partnering, marriage, and families will become almost obsolete? I think statistically there are far more single people than there used to be….it’s kinda scary.

RE: Is it me or are these topics getting boring?

thumbs up "if you are not amused by the threads do a thread of your own"

That sums it up for me.

RE: The next U.S. President

I think, at first anyway, there will be such joy that we are getting rid of Bush that there will be a lot of optimism. In the beginning optimism will be very high, in general, though there will always be those who keep their unrealistic expectations and their negative energy high--and, of course, they do harbor a certain level of practicality within such a viewpoint. However, in general, I think there will be quite a bit of optimisim. Which will, of course, fade in time.cheers

RE: Personality types...?

Yes, I took it too. Pretty accurate.hmmm But so is my horoscope description posted a few days ago. What does it all mean? confused

Body and Soul

Yes. I am impressed by this quotation. Could you elucidate, Conrad, on your personal interpretation of this statement? cheers

I have felt that way at a deathbed too. Once the spirit left the body, I felt the body itself had lost it's meaning.

That makes me think again about what I'm trying to figure out here. I do believe the body is more than just a shell. I think when the life force is inside the body, there is a body-mind connection, and through the body, the spirit suggests itself, expresses itself, etc. I think that in some ways, the body is just a physical shell, and some people are blessed with 'better shells' than others. However, we do relate to the world through our bodies, and in some cases our bodies become who we are. So, a person who is born without the 'standard' prerequisites of 'beauty', becomes more beautiful, literally and physically, because of the expression of their inner beauty through the body. And conversely, a person might be less 'beautiful' physically, because they don't express their inner beauty through their body--and I'm not talking about liposuction and make up. Am I making any sense at all? dunno

RE: Langston Hughes

I love Doris Lessing. But I am not cool cheers

Body and Soul

Lots of people, maybe most, believe the body is 'just a shell.' That's what I'm wondering, questioning. Good response.thumbs up

RE: Could you / would you take it?

I haven't lived in or been to the States for five years and really only know about the recession from news reports--that is, my friends there are not happy about the economy, but they are not seriously suffering from it righ now.

Do you think what these people did has to do with the recession? I mean, if they were doing as well economically as before, would they still go and scavenge other peoples' stuff?

Body and Soul

How much of who you are is your mind/heart/soul and how much is your body? I am wondering how much of self identity is the inner self and how much of it is the body. Is the ‘self’ (your self identity) closely tied to the body?

How do these ideas affect how we see the world, how we relate to the world, connect with others, etc.

How much is body image related to how one functions in society or copes with or reacts to life? I saw a news piece about a soldier who lost both lower legs in Iraq. Before being wounded, he had been very athletic. Now, he has two prosthetic legs and continues to be athletic. Obviously, his identity with himself being an active, athletic person didn’t end but adapted to change.

Does being a certain body type affect one’s self image? Conversely, does the way you think influence what type of body you have; that is, does the inner self, not just behavior, affect if you are fat or thin and in many cases healthy or unhealthy?

If what and who you are inside is reflected in the body you present to the world, is it wrong for other people to be attracted or not attracted to your body as much as to your mind/soul/heart?

Is this a scary question?

I'm totally against it myself. But that's JMO.

I don't like to see women doing this to themselves, but it's their bodies. I think a lot of woman would be interested to know what men think.
