RE: Water

When on walking holidays in the Alps or Lake District I like to fill my drinking bottle from the mountain streams.

My brother thought I was crazy.

"What if you catch something? What if there's a dead sheep just upstream?"

So, after a bit of persuasion, I managed to get him to take the taste test. My stream water against his tap water.

The stream water won. The tap water tasted metallic and greasy compared to the fresher purer stream water.

Coming back to the OP. Yes I can taste the difference between different waters. But no, I don't bother filtering it. It's just not something that takes a high priority in my life.

But if I ever go on a cruise holiday again I'd be tempted to take something to filter out the chlorine that they put in the tap water. I found that chlorine has a similar effect to bromine.

RE: what does a guy look in a girl for dating?

I expect her to stand me up. In my experience, when it comes to first time dates, more often than not, the girl never arrives.

If she does turn up, then I don't expect anything. What will happen will happen. I can't control and I have no wish to control the behaviour of another adult person.

For 2nd and subsequent dates I have some idea of what to expect - and that will depend on the particular person I'm dating.

RE: wouldnt it be nice if the tories lost the election

Yeah, it'd be nice if the Tories lost the next General Election.

Be nice if Labour lost it too. And the Liberals and UKIP and the Greens and the BNP and the Monster Raving Looney Party.

None of them even remotely represent the sort of government I'd like to see in this country.

RE: A question in general plus advice needed...!!!

Roman Catholics vs Anglicans. I was using an analogy.

To make the point that it is human nature to exagerate and to focus on the difference between 2 similar things.

Phoenix, this is what you are doing when you say that "Men and women are very different. And I'm not talking about their bodies..How they think is very different" You are focusing on and exagerating the differences between men and women.

RE: A question in general plus advice needed...!!!

Yes "slightly different brains".

Just as Roman Catholics and Anglicans are slightly different.

Just as the focus is often on the differences between Catholics and Anglicans. The Pope vs the Archbishop of Canterbury / the Queen of England. Mass vs Sunday Service. No birth control vs birth control etc etc etc

But when it comes down to it both are: monotheistic. Both are based on the New Testament with a large influence on the Old Testament. Both believe in the divinity of Christ etc etc etc.

Women and mens brains both have the same basic structures. Work via the same bio-electrical processes. Are connected to the rest of the body via nerves.

And when it comes down to it, I have more in common with a typical British woman - in terms of what I think about, my attitude to life, my desires, my perspective on life - than I do with a typical man from a non-European culture.

Women are not from Mars. Men are not from Venus. Women are from Earth. Men are from Earth.

Women are not some mythical unicorn type creatures.

As a 16 year old, to me women were like some unassailable mythical type creatures. When I got to know one intimately I realised that they weren't - that they were similar to me, but with more of a feminine character.

And that coming back to the Original Post, there's every chance that zhkhan's friend wants the same things out of their relationship that zhkhan does.

RE: A question in general plus advice needed...!!!

I think that the differences between men and women are like the differences between the Roman Catholic and the Anglican churches.

A lot is made over the differences, but when you look at it on a global scale there are more similarities than differences.

RE: fav old flim???

Nosferatu.

I can't be doing with all these new-fangled films with their gimmicky sound-tracks. If I wanted to hear people talk I'd put the wireless on, not go to the cinema.

RE: A question in general plus advice needed...!!!

1 does she have a boyfriend (or girlfriend)? If yes, then don't rush it.

2 Do you ever go to discos / bars / pubs / parties together? Anywhere that you have a few alcoholic drinks? Try kissing her after you've both had a couple of drinks.

3 If you don't go drinking together, why not just ask her how she feels about you and then tell her how you feel about her - but make it plain that if she wants to keep your relationship platonic then that's fine by you (assuming it is actually fine by you?).

4 If she doesn't want to be your girlfriend, get yourself out to your student social scene and start talking to different girls.

Have you ever had a girlfriend?

Once you've had one, you'll find it's much easier to get the next one because you'll realise that there's not a lot to worry about and that girls aren't so different to boys.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy yourself. Wish I was a student again!

RE: Why do

Some of them will be scammers and spammers.

Some of them might have looked at your profile when they weren't signed-in.

RE: Fave alchoholic drink outta these ???

Saint Emilion Premier Grand Cru red wine.

Or Timothy Taylor Landlord beer.

RE: what kind of bicycle you have?

Velokraft VK2

RE: Dating a Genevan Guy

Geneva's a great city. It would be worth moving there even if you didn't know anybody there.

RE: Women in general are gold digggers

Really good post Stevie.

You make a very good point about the difference in responses you got depending on how much you claimed you earnt.

Maybe I should add a photo of me outside my 10 bedroomed mansion to my profile - which is a bit if a joke because it cost me less than a typical new 4 bedroomed house would have.

RE: Money for air ticket advice needed

Shame.

You should have done a 419eater style scambait for a bit of amusement for the rest of us.

RE: bigger girls

The point I was making with my list, is that bigger women are fine for me as long as they have some other redeeming qualities.

Just as a penniless woman would be fine if she had some redeeming qualities.

We all have different standards, and different priorities in what we want in a partner.

But I would not be particularly happy with a woman who was thick in the head, had an unkind personality, and who was boring to be with.

RE: British women ?

There are some wonderful, attractive, educated, down to earth, funny, affectionate, hard-working, cultured, active, sophisticated UK women.

The trick is to find one. And to find one that's compatible with you.

Not all of them are fat, lazy, uncultured telly addicts.

RE: Money for air ticket advice needed

Scammer scammer scammer.

When you say you met her, do you mean you've actually physically met? Or do you mean you met her (or him) on the internet?

If you want to meet her, or meet her again, you need to go to Thailand - and meet in safe, secure, public place if it's for the 1st time.

If you sent her £600 you'd get some hard luck story about how she lost her baggage and tickets in the taxi. And she'd ask you to send some more money.

Has she got a sick buffalo yet?

But there is something very attractive about a good Thai girl. They have a wonderfully serene disposition.

RE: Computer problems....

What's the exact model of the broadband modem / router that you've got?

Also if you do a broadband speed test - eg this one
what results do you get?

Any error messages when you lose all connections?

Do you lose connection with 2 out of 3 devices connected, or is it only when all 3 are connected?

Do you know how to get onto the admin pages of your modem / router? If yes, what so they tell you when the line drops?

Have you tried Virgin Broadband technical support for help?

RE: Phsychopath Test

She murdered her sister because her sister had a terminal illness that was causing her a lot of pain and had taken away her sisters motor-neurone functions.

So her sister begged her to kill her.

She sadly complied as an act of mercy.

RE: Old fashioned music ......

Yeah there was a lot of great music made in the 60's and 70's.

But I can't be doing with all this video stuff.

For me, music is best listened to live or from a good record player. Youtube sound quality is awful.

Here's a recording of Talk Talk's Happiness Is Easy

Click on the download this file button - unless you've got an incredible internet connection - otherwise you get stop start music.

I downloaded this earlier today (took me 8 mins to download). By far the nicest sound I've heard coming from my PC speakers - even though the recording level's slightly too high.

This file was created by recording the song from a 35 year old record player.

Please let me know if you like it.

RE: DO YOU FEEL SAFE FLYING THESE DAYS WITH ALL THE CRASHES LATELY?

Even in these days of terrorist activity, mechanical failures and pilot error, air travel is still safer than using or being close to chairs or beds.

Looking at the UK death statistics for 2007

Section V95-97: 23 people died from "air and space transport accidents"

Section W06 & W07: 137 people died from falls involving beds and chairs.

Stairs and steps in section W10 are even more lethal, killing 620 people. That's a couple of Jumbo Jets worth every year.

So you should lose more sleep worrying about going to sleep or sitting around at home than you do from air travel. And stairs should frighten the life out of you. Don't go near them if you want to stay safe!

But like advice in stocks and shares related investments: past performance is no guarantee of future performance.

RE: DO YOU FEEL SAFE FLYING THESE DAYS WITH ALL THE CRASHES LATELY?

Even if the Stinger warhead doesn't explode, a missile travelling at Mach 2.2 into a jet engine's going to wreck it. Not good on full-throttle just after take-off.

The only consolation is that no-one's used Stingers yet on commercial airplanes. If they're ever going to use them, why haven't they used them yet?

But if they do get used, you can say that you read it here on Connectingsingles first.

And thousands of nuclear weapons have been created. Sooner or later, it's quite possible that someone will detonate one in anger. And that would bring down quite a few airplanes too as well as wiping out a few square kilometres.

No-one can predict future events like terrorist Stinger or nuclear missile attacks.

Just as no-one predicted 9/11.

All that I can predict is that something unexpected will happen in the future.

RE: DO YOU FEEL SAFE FLYING THESE DAYS WITH ALL THE CRASHES LATELY?

I'm just reading Andy McNab's latest book "Seven Troop". In that he mentions that a lot of Stinger hand-held surface to air missiles were given to the Afghans in the 1980's to shoot down Soviet Hind helicopters.

According to McNab, the Afghan's kept most of their Stingers "for a rainy day".

One day they might decide it's pouring.

They might decide to start taking pot shots at airliners taking-off from various airports around the world...

RE: I BET YOU NONE OF YOU EVER FULFILLED ANY INTERESTING DREAMS GOALS CHALLENGES OR AMBITIONS !

There are 3 ways to travel round the World. The easy way, the medium way and the difficult way.

The easy way is to buy a round the world air ticket and stop off at a few hotels or guest houses at various places on the way.

The medium way is to do what Michael Palin once did. Fly to the North or South Pole and then run around it. Around the World in less than 8 seconds.

The difficult way is to walk or cycle round it, using ships or planes to cross the Pacific and Atlantic. Or if you wanted to make it really difficult, you could row from Russia to Alaska and from Canada to Europe after cycling across Europe Asia and North America.

RE: ................

Markizamkd25, has there been any change in your circumstances, or in you, that might have caused your dating activity to dry up?

RE: im no stig but

That was a mildly humourous Top Gear wind-up.

It may have been Schuey as the Stig on that programme - driving the latest Ferrari supercar. Just look at the lap times. Great PR exercise for Ferrari. Schuey's job before his recent return to F1 was PR man for Ferrari.

But Schumacher wasn't the Stig for the Koenigsegg, Zonda, Ascari, Bugatti, Caterham etc etc etc.

The BBC couldn't afford him as a regular contributor.

You'll notice that the Stig reverted back to helmet wearing anonymity for the rest of the series. Why do that if it was really Schumacher? A glimpse of Schumachers face on each programme would have helped boost ratings.

RE: I BET NONE OF YOU ARE DECENT CITIZENS DONE ANY VOLUNTEER WORK OR PUBLIC DUTIES ?

Gilly, you're absolutely right.

I've never done any volunteer work or public duties.

I have no desire to be a "Decent Citizen".

I have every desire to make myself rich through good old fashioned hard work. Through creating products or services that other people want to buy. Creating things that will enhance other people's life.

It's what I call the selfishness paradox. By being extremly selfish - but honest - I'm likley to create just as much or maybe more happiness for mankind than someone doing "unselfish" voluntary work.

The real benefactors to mankind - the people that have made the most difference to the quality of life have been the Jethro Tulls, the George Stephensons, the Henry Fords, the Sakichi Toyoda's not the Mother Teresa's.
