I was raised around a large number of elderly disabled people. I was taught that they were as normal and as important, if not more important than the reat of us. The combat Vets deserved extra respect.
In addition to my wife there are/were many friends and family members with varying mental and physical disabilities. In the twenty or so years I’ve seen more and more of them treated like second-class citizens because of those disabilities.
As a friend pointed out one time if you’re not old or disabled now, odds are you will be one day.
I literally came within inches of becoming a paraplegic in an on the job accident fifteen years ago. If I had, and some SOB had placed something along the lines of “Your life Choices” in front of me I would have knifed them.
I don’t begrudge anyone who has a different idea about how they would deal with their own aging process or disability but I take great exception to anyone that tries to convince them they are better off dead especially when it comes from someone with a financial interest.
"Your Life, Your Choices" presents end-of-life choices in a way aimed at steering users toward predetermined conclusions, much like a political "push poll." For example, a worksheet on page 21 lists various scenarios and asks users to then decide whether their own life would be "not worth living."
The circumstances listed include ones common among the elderly and disabled: living in a nursing home, being in a wheelchair and not being able to "shake the blues." There is a section which provocatively asks, "Have you ever heard anyone say, 'If I'm a vegetable, pull the plug'?" There also are guilt-inducing scenarios such as "I can no longer contribute to my family's well being," "I am a severe financial burden on my family" and that the vet's situation "causes severe emotional burden for my family."
When the government can steer vulnerable individuals to conclude for themselves that life is not worth living, who needs a death panel?
Last I heard the WSJ was considered to be reliable. Any disabled vets care to put in their two cents?
Some would say risk assessment does not call for it.
I’m more inclined to worry about the risks from improperly handled food reaching the market place than I am swine flu.
To better quantify the impact of foodborne diseases on health in the United States, we compiled and analyzed information from multiple surveillance systems and other sources. We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year. Known pathogens account for an estimated 14 million illnesses, 60,000 hospitalizations, and 1,800 deaths. Three pathogens, Salmonella, Listeria, and Toxoplasma, are responsible for 1,500 deaths each year, more than 75% of those caused by known pathogens, while unknown agents account for the remaining 62 million illnesses, 265,000 hospitalizations, and 3,200 deaths. Overall, foodborne diseases appear to cause more illnesses but fewer deaths than previously estimated.
I've met people in their 20s that were washed up from hard lives or hard living. I've also met ones in their 80s or even a few in their 90s that had more life in them that most 30 year olds.
Years ago I’d given myself a good nick on the chin trying to shave fast with a dull blade. Someone asks me later, “Did you cut yourself shaving?”
I looked at them for a few seconds trying to figure if they were serious and responded, “No, I just twisted my ankle.” Then I walked away with an exaggerated, fake limp. They never asked me a personal question again.
Well Frank settled down in the Valley and hung his wild years on a nail that he drove through his wife's forehead he sold used office furniture out there on San Fernando Road and assumed a $30,000 loan at 15 1/4 % and put down payment on a little two bedroom place his wife was a spent piece of used jet trash made good bloody marys kept her mouth shut most of the time had a little Chihuahua named Carlos that had some kind of skin disease and was totally blind. They had a thoroughly modern kitchen self-cleaning oven (the whole bit) Frank drove a little sedan they were so happy
One night Frank was on his way home from work, stopped at the liquor store, picked up a couple Mickey's Big Mouths drank 'em in the car on his way to the Shell station, he got a gallon of gas in a can, drove home, doused everything in the house, torched it, parked across the street, laughing, watching it burn, all Halloween orange and chimney red then Frank put on a top forty station got on the Hollywood Freeway headed north Never could stand that dog
PETA is one of those groups who seem to be mainly about their own glory. Not as bad as ALF at least.
To be clear: We are not advocating the use of physical violence as a first strike measure or pivotal tactic for animal liberation, but nor are we taking it off the table as something that has to be dogmatically excluded on fundamentalist pacifist principles alone. We prefer not to disarm this struggle against monumental evil and destruction of life in any way. In some contexts outside the First World, in particular, violence may be very necessary – such as to save the Rwandan mountain gorillas from extinction, and indeed there is an armed struggle of soldiers against poachers to do this. Thankfully, Hall is not directing this effort, for the gorillas would be slaughtered and served as burgers, right next to Hall’s Vegan Outreach stand giving away free tofu pups.
You need to focus on something other than you. It seems you have a problem with someone you have never met, and will never meet not buying in to the image you have crafted for yourself.
I could understand your being so emotional about it were I one of the young women you seem so fond of. Given that I am an older straight male it seems very strange indeed.
While it is amusing to watch you back peddle when you put yourself in a corner with a hasty, emotional post it is rather sad too. Do you really think anyone buys your stories when you make a fool of yourself in one of those posts? If so, guess again.
Perhaps you'd be happier if you started your own thread. Perhaps one about your love for, what was the word you used?
Because there are several here that trash anyone that expresses even the slightest belief in God. The idea of a power greater than themselves contradicts what their mommys said about them being the center of the universe.
The real laugh in the majority of them claim to be open minded.
THEY, and they alone can state what you or I believe. Apparently they know us better than we know ourselves. Don't bother arguing that they have your opinion wrong though. If they say you are a mouth breathing, race bating creationist you are no matter what you may think you believe.
But last I checked the United Nations, Oprah and the ghost of Elvis had not backed them up on that so if you with to tell them to go chase themselves you may well be within your rights.
I go by content. If someone says something clicked for them and I sound like their dream man I get suspicious. Most of the profiles I have put up made me sound far from prime mate material.
Honesty is a double edged sword.
If there is a link to a “translation site” I block them.
As much admiration as I have for the Thai culture and people I would politely bow out due to my own shortcomings that might displease a Thai woman.
