I feel your pain there mate. But to be honest, I believe they can. The rules are the same as with any other relationship with communication & respect being at the forefront. I do however have to say that, it's something that you both have to deeply want and something you both have to talk about (communication) to really be sure that you'd both be able to see one another. Alot of times, one side has to be willing to sacrafice a part of their life in order to start something with someone else.
If after deep consideration, you both feel that you can make it work with one another, then I say go for it. Just be sure to talk about it in depth with that person because it's best for everyone to put their questions & concerns out there, before any moves are made one way or the other and to see the ups & downs of the relationship.
