SADNESS IN POETRY

People are calling me a poet,
In this cozy little neighborhood,
And let me tell you right now Folks,
That gets me feelin' somethin' good,

See, I don't write,
To excite,
To titillate,
Or to please,
I only dip my pen in life's inkwell,
For the joy, the calm, that it brings,

When I'm alone,
It guides me home,
When I'm in fear,
It draws me near,
When I lose hope,
It helps me cope,
When I feel shame,
It remembers my name,

Doesn't always gladden me,
Writing certain moody thoughts,
Will often sadden me,

But sometimes,
We all need,
To be sad.

SO HORRIBLY UNKIND

Always trouble ahead,
So much trouble behind,
If I can't discover,
A way to hover,
Over this darkened cover,
I think I'll lose my mind,

In my home there's a room,
Shut in like a tomb,
And so disguise the lies,
Muffle my anguished cries,
That are so Horribly Unkind,

The glittering sparkles on a distant shore,
A ship set adrift forevermore,
Draws me falsely to delusionary hope,
I will no, not ever,
Find a way to cope,

Disguising the lying,
Muffle anguished crying,
Listen to my mournful sighing,

Sparkling glitter,
On a distant shore,
I am dying,
I have lost my
mind,
So Horribly,
Unkind

About this poem:
Life ain't right sometimes. In spite of our attempts to cope we can't seem to iron out all the wrinkles. We seem paused (stuck!) in a terrible place where our dreams appear gone forever and all we focus on is our problems, past, present, and future.

TIME (Eternity Together)

Why does time
Not seem to last?
And why does time
Pass by so fast?

A brief moment together
Locked in Eternity
Our unlikely connection
Is now, You and Me

The Path Of Time
Is forever
We are right now
In Eternity Together

THE PLACE

There's a place I go to hide,
A place deep in the, Canyons of my mind,

In this place there lives a child,
The child that I was,
Once upon a time,

It's a place I go to learn,
When so much of life, Seems nothing but a blur,

And I run there when this world,
Begins to frighten me,
Knowing I will find,
This wise old child,
Will always enlighten me,

God watches over me,
This much I can see,
God watches over me,
And one day I will be....,

When the world's just not spinning right,
When the hounds Of Hell
come charging out of the night,
I know just the song,
This Ancient Of Forevers child,
Will write,
Wherein this troubled world,
Will always be alright,

And here I go again, Running to The Place,
Chased by a dark evil wind,
But the answer's right here all along,
My Dear Friends,
It's a new creation of singing,
My deep inner child writing,
A brand new song

DO NOT READ THIS!

"Daddy?
What is that?"
"It's nothing Sweetie,
Now go to bed."

"But Daddy?
I still hear it!"
"Listen young lady,
Now do what I said!"

"Daddy?
Do you love me?"
"Oh honey,
You know that I do."

"Then Daddy?
Please tell me,"
"Yes Princess?"
"Please tell me the truth."

"I told you it's a cat,
Or a squealing mouse,
That umm...,
That cat's about to crunch."

"Be careful or,
He might just,
Just might,
Have YOU for lunch!"

"Not funny,
Dummy Daddy!
Sounds just like,
A girl who's hurt and crying."

"I told you,
You stupid little brat,
It's just that ugly fu*kin' mouse,
Screaming out as it's dying!"

"Daddy?,
Do you still love me?"
"Please, Sweet Pumkin,
You know doggone well that I do."

"Then Daddy?
Please tell me,
Why you won't just,
Won't just tell me the truth?"

About this poem:
Wow! This one is WAY DIFFERENT from any of my usual styles. It felt like I was on a high as I wrote it, or rather, it wrote itself. I just arranged the words on a piece of brown paper bag as I sat at a bus stop.
I believe the first time a child catches a parent in a lie, or observes them doing something immoral or illegal, they are very confused and sadly may even, like the child in this poem, question that parents love for them.

And now for something completely different...Is the crying this little girl heard coming from outside or inside the house? Is it her mother? Her sister?
Does she believe it could be her daddy that's making it happen. And what could this child possibly feel when she looks at him?
She asks him twice if he loves her.

MINER'S SOUL

Can anyone say,
When the fair winds will play,
Along the hills of my blue West Virginia?

In best of times,
Coal flowed rich from the mines,
My son, you just had to have been there,

About '59,
Big machines were rolled on line,
And the young wives of miners saw worry,

Beginning of the end,
No they could not pretend,
Their dreams became a cold coal dust slurry,

With strong colliers hands,
They did build up these lands,
Till life's seasons bled thru gray December,

So when it's my time,
Lay me down deep in a coal mine,
So my West Virginia miner's soul will remember.

About this poem:
I'm a native West Virginian. There were many miners in our clan. When mechanized mining and mountain top removal replaced human hands for extracting coal, West Virginia fell into a recession that is still apparent today.

INESTIMABLE HEART

On a dark lonely road north of Little Rock,
Winds howling through the trees,
Maggie drove along slowly,
Feeling quite ill at ease,

She rounded a curve barely creeping,
She could hardly see the road,
She clicked high beams on then suddenly,
She saw a figure coming her way slow,

A tiny little girl in a stained white gown,
Clutching her dripping dolly tightly to her chest,
Maggie pulled alongside and opened the door,
And nearly lost all of her breath,

"Get in child," Maggie said comforting,
This heartache barely pulled herself in,
Maggie saw the bloodstains on her nightgown,
Then this grateful Little Angel grinned,

"Why are you alone Sweetheart?", Maggie asked,
"And tell me why you are here?",
"He dragged me into his car so fast!", she cried,
Then came flooding, a tiny Angel's tears,

Maggie brushed them away softly,
"I promise to do all I can",
"What's your name child?," she asked,
"Naomi May Massey, will you please help me ma'am?"

It's been seven years now,
Since that dark rainy night,
Naomi's in such a happy home now,
But Maggie often wonders what might,

Have happened to this child,
Had she not passed that way,
It was not her intended route,
She had detoured to avoid a delay,

Clutching her heart she now realizes,
Her true destination suddenly revealed,
It wasn't her hands steering her car,
The mighty Hands of God had taken the wheel.

JUST THAT KIND OF GIRL

When the path you're on,
Seems to remain the same,
Just take the next turn,
And you will begin to see a change,

When clouds of darkness,
Start to roll in,
Please realize you can,
Truly begin again,

I know your painful past,
Keeps trying to hang on,
Too alone, too scared, No will to move on,

But never yield to fear,
The pain and the tears,
You're in the here and now,
You can't roll back the years,

So, wipe away those tears,
From your soft weary eyes,
Hold your head up,
Keep your eyes to the skies,

And you will rise,
Above your stormy gray world,
You know deep in your heart you're,
Just That Kind Of Girl.

MY TELEPHONE INSIDE

Call waiting?
Not now,
Three-way?
And how,
Leave a message?
I may read it,
Block me?
Well I don't need it,
On hold?
For freakin' ever,
Call forwarding?
I may never,
Caller ID?
Just who this be?
LED readout?
Yeah, I see,

My brain is like a network,
Of entangled spaghetti vermicelli,
Taking & sending endless calls,
Like those scammers in New Delhi,

Is there a reason for this rhyme?
Seems I may not have a clue,
Cause every time I call myself to inquire,
The damn busy signal just won't let me through!

(DAYDREAM) Prayer

Where......?
Where are we going?
Where......?
Where are we now?

And when......?
Will it be over?
And will we......?
Will we make it somehow?

INFINITY'S END

Travel light years to the edge of the universe,
Then leap into forever,
Straight to the vanishing point,
The fabric of time then sever,

Through myriad of dimensions unknown,
Past the glow of Heaven's Gate,
Through labyrinthine of black holes,
Transcending the machinations of fate,

Where are we never going? Where have we always been?
The truth you seek so fervently,
Lay waiting at,
Infinity's End.

DOWN LIFE'S ROAD

Whistle as you wander down life's road,
Will you become an eagle or a toad?
Cause you don't know what each new day will bring,
So play and prance and laugh and dance and sing,

Trouble as you wander down life's road,
You weaken underneath the heavy load,
And you don't know exactly what to do,
Fight with all your might crash on through,

Steady now you wander down life's road,
You are becoming what you've always known,
And now you know what wisened days will bring,
Reach out to grab hold of the Brass Ring,

Cautious strides with purpose down life's road,
Thankful that your story can now be told,
Cause now you know what each new day will bring,
So pray and praise and let those Churchbells ring.
