Summer is here and it's watermelon season. If you like watermelon but you have trouble cutting it into pieces, an way to easily do this is to try my curved watermelon knife.
I have 2 of them. One curved for left-handed and one curved for right-handed.

I had told myself not to spend any more money..

While I am unemployed, I am on government benefits. That means limited spending on things that aren't bills. I make a HUGE batch of a certain dish (this case, sauce for pasta), and then I take 4 scoops of each, and bag it. I then let it cool down and place them in the freezer.

The last time I did that, I had meatballs for a month straight.

Anyway, I try to limit my spending as to not run out of money. Nothing worse than running out of money 5 days before payday, with nothing to eat.. I have avoided that every month by cooking a huge batch and freezing it. This month, it was going well. Until I remembered my family's annual Easter lunch. 15 people will partake in the feast, and we each have to bring an item of food. I am in charge of bringing the most important thing - bread. With the inflation hitting here, everything gets more expensive. From fuel to food. Thanks, Biden.. Anyway.. The price of bread has skyrocketed these past few weeks, so it gets expensive to buy bread for the entire family. I ended up with seven packs of bread, which took a sizeable amount of money. It HAS to be enough. If it isn't, there's a McDonald's right next to where we are having our Easter lunch. But generally, I am pretty good at judging how much bread I need to get in order to make sure everyone are well fed.

Will I spend more money before the end of the month? Well.. It depends.. I have enough food for two weeks, which makes it close.. I have a bunch of chicken wings in the freezer, as well as some one person meals. Even those one person meals have gone up in price. They are usually super cheap, but in these inflation times, everything is expensive.

Any bone broth experts here?

After hearing about all its health benefits I decided to give it a lash Wednesday night.
Since my local butcher didn't have bones, fancy that a butcher without bones, beats me confused
but anyways, I decided to go with a chicken carcass, a broth and leave roasting marrow bone for another day instead.

After roasting the carcass for 40mins I then popped it into the slow cooker, an hour later I went to bed but not first without lifting the lid to give it a stir, yuck did it stink barf
hoped it taste better then it smelled.

After 12hrs it was done, after allowing it to cool I took a taste, not bad, at least its drinkable.
Have to admit there was a bitter taste which mad me question had I over used the apple cider vinegar or perhaps too much black corn pepper.

As the day went on I began feeling sick, all night long I had become very unwell, hardly slept a wink blues
next morning I had to ring into work to let them know I wouldn't be in.
At this stage the broth should of Gelled, it had not but instead there was what seemed like a cloud of some sort of fungus was growing within the jar, growing by the hour, still ungelled so at this stage I doubt it shall.

At this stage I'm convinced I've poisoned myself .....
but since you can't kill a bad thing, as you can see I'm still here very happy
not rightly better but thankfully I've survived the worst.
Anyway......
I don't yet want to give up on bone marrow broth or roasting so if anyone is familiar with the recipe I'd appreciate anyone's advice as to where could I of gone wrong dunno
I'm guessing the apple cider vinegar unless of the fault was with the carcass.

The Things We Learn

For years I made my own dog food. After I got the three pound Chi, she just shared my meals so no dog food had to be made. Then when I inherited Lucy, I decided to go back to making my own. Yesterday I went to college (my you tube) to make sure I'm making it healthy. Whew did I learn a lot about dog food.

There are some Nutrients I wasn't adding but need to.
Beans for magnesium (the girls don't like beans so I will have to mash them)
Cod Liver Oil for Omega 3
an egg and grind up half the egg shell for Calcium
Kelp powder & ground ginger (for something but I forget)
I used yams & carrots but I didn't know I wasn't supposed to peel them, more nutritional if not peeled.
When using chicken or beef - add a small amount of liver for iron.

The rest of the ingredients I already used. The only thing is NEVER to use onions or garlic which is toxic to dogs. (Shame as I have used garlic in almost everything)

Making cat food is a different ball game but I'm not playing that one as I don't own cats.

My cooking....

Women have been known to fall on their knees, and propose marriage, after tasting some of my dishes. From the simple, to the annoyingly French, what a scene. But I usually am careful in just which ladies I decide to share my precious bodily pure essence with. Aa.

The First of the Season

Mmm mmmmm! I don't know about anywhere else, but corn on the cob is a 'thing' here. Every year, we wait impatiently for those first ears of corn to ripen. The first corn on the cob of the season hit the outdoor kiosks this past week and is it ever good! I always frequent one family's kiosks as they only sell Jubilee corn on the cob, the absolute best and sweetest.

Even when I was a little girl, Dad & Mom would load all five of us kids up in the station wagon and head out to the valley (where I live now) to buy Jubilee corn. Sure, I've had other corn, peaches and cream, which is very prevalent here, but it doesn't compare to the Jubilee. The route I take for my bike ride is full of cornfields now, although I think much of it is 'cow' corn - completely different from the Jubilee, although I think the cows enjoy theirs as much as I enjoy mine.

I used to strip the husks off the corn and boil it like my Mom used to, but found barbecuing it in it's husk far more flavourful. That first mouthful of corn tonight, I'm sure my tastebuds were having an o*gasm. Juicy, super sweet, firm but not tough. There's absolutely nothing like it.

It looks like the vegetable du jour will be corn on the cob until we can't get it anymore (September), and I'm sick of it (I don't think there is such a thing). Tonight's dinner, bbq'd ribs and corn on the cob. Now that's a meal!

Bison Burger...

I was at Whole Foods Market yesterday morning returning an Amazon purchase. It was before lunch and the cooked foods weren't available... no pizza ready either. I've been eating less beef lately, but I passed the refrigerated section and curious when I saw ground Bison meat on sale. Okay, let's do it!

From what I read, Bison meat is an excellent source of protein, rich in B vitamins, high in iron, selenium, and zinc. The package listed 10% fat.

I fried up a Bison burger for lunch today and found it cooks differently than beef. I had the skillet temperature on medium, a normal setting for beef hamburgers. Not much fat coming from the burger. Noticeably, the texture was different and it broke when flipping it a few times. When pressed, blood oozed indicating it wasn't cooked enough.
If you've pan fried flank steak, you know it takes much, much longer to cook down to the center... Bison is much the same.

So, how does it taste?
I read it has a mild flavor. That's about right... I've got enough meat for 2 more burgers... maybe Friday and Saturday.
I'll be sure to have the windows open to let the smoke escape!

Junior...

I was around 7 years old when my family moved from New York to Miami. Life here was pretty simple. My neighborhood was a place where you didn't always lock your door as friends would call your name as they entered your house... much like a brother or sister.

Two houses down, lived Junior... he was a chubby likable kid, maybe a year or two younger than me. If you remember the breakfast cereal commercials where the older boys were afraid to eat it... they got "Mikie" to try it.... "Yeah, let Mikie try it" Well, Junior was the the "Mikie" in my neighborhood. He had no fear of the unknown... We could convince him to eat just about anything. Milk and Tabasco sauce? No problem.

We would line up our toy solders on the table and pay Junior 5¢ to snort pepper and 'sneeze' the solders off the table! He was that kinda kid... if you could think of something stupid, Junior would try it.

We couldn't figure out why Junior was so chubby. His older sister and parents were of normal proportions yet he was overweight.

Now, further down the block lived Tom. He was my older brothers age. When all of us got together, my brother and Tom (by age) were the leaders. Tom was a baseball player and very athletic.

Tom's house was slightly larger than the other houses on my street and his parents added a utility/laundry room to the back of their house. They cut a rectangular hole in the dividing wall between the main house and the utility room and fitted a 'box' used as a giant hamper, in which they could put dirty clothes and 'flip' the box to the other room. It was a really great idea... otherwise, you would have to carry the laundry outside the back door and and walk around to the utility room.

One night, Tom's family, got in the car and drove away. Junior saw this and went around the back of their house. He entered the utility room, climbed into the hamper and 'flipped' himself into the main house. Junior headed to the kitchen... He had fixed himself a late night snack on Tom's parents dining room table.

Just then, headlights appeared in the front window and someone quickly walked to the door and opened it. It was Tom's mother... apparently she had forgotten something and they drove back home to get it. Well who was more shocked... Junior or Tom's Mother when she found him stuffing himself at the table?

As the story goes, Junior's parents found out and he was punished. This led to the confession that Junior was daring enough to sneak into their house at night (while they were sleeping) to raid the refrigerator. That ended the mystery Tom's mother had, as to the 'constant' disappearance of food from the refrigerator. Tom and his father were both very slender and she never suspected it was someone coming in the house.
