The Things We Learn

For years I made my own dog food. After I got the three pound Chi, she just shared my meals so no dog food had to be made. Then when I inherited Lucy, I decided to go back to making my own. Yesterday I went to college (my you tube) to make sure I'm making it healthy. Whew did I learn a lot about dog food.

There are some Nutrients I wasn't adding but need to.
Beans for magnesium (the girls don't like beans so I will have to mash them)
Cod Liver Oil for Omega 3
an egg and grind up half the egg shell for Calcium
Kelp powder & ground ginger (for something but I forget)
I used yams & carrots but I didn't know I wasn't supposed to peel them, more nutritional if not peeled.
When using chicken or beef - add a small amount of liver for iron.

The rest of the ingredients I already used. The only thing is NEVER to use onions or garlic which is toxic to dogs. (Shame as I have used garlic in almost everything)

Making cat food is a different ball game but I'm not playing that one as I don't own cats.

Was you final product in Pellet/granule form?
I do use a food processor to pulse everything together so I would say more like a pellet form but sort of a chunky mush. Oh and never use salt & pepper (but the dogs love that - shoot)

There are videos on how to make dry dog food too but my brain can't cram anymore in.
I've been thinking of making dried pellets for my dogs too. A good nutritious African Grey biscuit will be next .. laugh
There is a peace of mind when you KNOW what you made is nutritious. Glad I'm retired because this takes time to do but very satisfying and the dogs are happy as can be.
I sprinkled chi seeds in their food today and almost put turmeric and thought best to check it out first to see if it is safe so thank you for that info.
Thanks Fay! I just haven't had time until now, as you probably know. I've taken a bit of a break from taking photos 8 hours a day 7 days a week. I've had pneumonia and had a one on one workshop with an architectural photographer at the same time, so had no time to rest. It's caught up to me, and so I've deactivated my facebook profile for now, just to give myself time to get other things done.

Good to see you, too! heart1
Oh man I'm glad you let me know and sorry to hear you were sick, ain't nobody got time for that.

Red what a nice profession for your son - I would be interested in hearing more about that.
