No strings attached...

I haven't played guitar in a few weeks. The last time, one string had popped. It was high E and I only had a spare B string so I put it on. I know it was too tight and wouldn't stay in tune, so that was only temporary. We were away from the house 3 days and now 2 more strings have popped. If this keeps up, I'll have no strings attached!

Actually, the guitar may be too loud for the condo and I'm thinking of packing it with foam or getting one that's only semi-hollow body... very quiet.

The good news is there's a music store 2 miles away!

Quantum weird other-worldly music - the theremin

I'd never heard of these before, not by name, and was bug-eyed watching one played in a classical concert. It isn't touched but played by the energy of the hands waving gently above it.

Turns out, I'd heard them often and often. So have you. They've been around for donkeys years. Did you know?

Maybe most famously, the Star Trek theme is played on the (above the?) theremin. If you've managed to avoid Star Trek all your life, you might have heard the Beach Boys singing Good Vibrations. I found a poor recording which shows the theremin player in the foreground, although he actually does touch his keyboard. I'll have to put it into a comment, only one video link allowed.

A question for the Irish.....

One of my favorite Irish groups is The Corrs. One of the tunes played by them (see below) is 'Toss the Feathers'.

Do any of the Irish blogger's know what it means to 'Toss the Feathers'...?

Exploring a new music genre.

I am very much a heavy metal fan. Usually, that's the only genre I listen to most of the time, but there are some breaks where I put on some country music.

But I felt like exploring a new genre: Rap! Or hip hop, to be broader.

So I put on the most popular female artist at the moment: Cardi B, and her newest album, Invasion of Privacy. So far it's a mix of "straight fire", as they say, and deep, personal songs. But is it an artist that I will become a fan of? Maybe.

She definitely has the catchy songs. One of them is "I Like It", even though it's a song about money and ex boyfriends. Most of her songs are about how rich she is, and how much money she earns. Usually I stay away from that type of music, but in this case, I am giving it a chance.

This isn't the first time I have explored rap, though. I listened to Drake's new album a few weeks ago, and it didn't do anything for me. I found it extremely boring, if I am honest.

But Cardi B has some home runs on her new album, for sure.

I will still be a metal fan, though.

The Isle of Innisfree - (updated)

Innisfree is a real part of Ireland (thanks to Mollybaby's correction) that Yeats uses as the setting for his poem, “The Lake Isle of Innisfree”. Yeats was an Irishman and many of his poems were set in Ireland. This shows that Yeats identifies with his Irish heritage. Not only does he connect with his fellow Irishmen, but he also connects with the land itself.

... Enjoy

UPDATE

Since up-loading this blog I have also found this little piece of information:
The spelling is different

Inishfree (or Inis Fraoigh)is a unique Island of only 640 acres of sandy beaches and breathtaking scenery. There is an air of peaceful tranquillity on this tiny Island that has attracted people to its shores for generations.

Inishfree (or Inis Fraoigh), lying 5km off the coast of Donegal, offers visitors an opportunity to step back to a simpler time, a time without cars, televisions or technology, and to experience the raw natural beauty of a place that for many holds an air of distinctive spirituality.

In Early Christian times Inishfree was controlled by Niall of the Nine Hostages, a local chieftain who became High King of Ireland. In the late medieval period, it was held by his descendants, the clan of Red Hugh O'Donnell, who led the last stand against England's conquest of Ulster.

By the early 20th century Inishfree Island was home to a tightly knit community of 36 Irish speaking families. In the mid 1970s, however, tough economic circumstances saw the sad exodus of the islanders to the mainland. A commune called Atlantis, and known in Ireland as the 'Screamers' due to their use of screaming as a form of therapy, took up residence in 1972 and remained until 1991.

Gradually, since 1991, former islanders, descendants and some mainlanders are moving back to the Island, keen to live closer to nature. The island's new residents are eager to help visitors make the most of their trip and experience the spiritual atmosphere that seems to pervade this unique place. Sea angling, boating, cultural workshops and diving are all available on the Island.

Bonana fanna fo-firley...

In January 1965 singer Shirley Ellis released a single record called "The Name Game" that made it to #3 on the US song charts for Billboard Hot 100. It stayed in the top ten for 5 weeks. As far as I can tell, three other songs peaked at number one keeping Shirley from making it to the top of the charts.
Those 3 songs were:
Downtown by Petula Clark
You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by The Righteous Brothers
This Diamond Ring by Gary Lewis and the Playboys

The Name Game is a light-hearted song with upbeat tempo and easy to remember melody. According to Wikipedia, The Name Game was created as a rhyming song based on a game Shirley played as a child.

There are some simple rules to the game and it can be used with nearly every first name... however, there are exceptions.

I've linked the YouTube video to my blog:

Led Zeppelin 50 years ago...

On January 12th, 1969 Led Zeppelin's self-titled debut album was released.
That was 50 years ago. Their musical style and presence inspired millions.
I know my world changed from it.

Embedded image from another site

Sadly, Zeppelin disbanded after the tragic 1980 death of their drummer, John Bonham.
Over the years, there have been reunions, re-released music sets, solo work and public appearances.

On nights when it's cold and I'm tired, If I hear an old Zeppelin song I sometimes get déjà vu of band rehearsals.

Marianne Faithfull

On the last day of the year I would like to share this simple but profound song by a very special lady.....

All I Wanna Do In Life

You've been right and I've been wrong,
I've been weak and you've been strong.
You've been good and I've been bad,
Think I've had enough of that.
'Cause all I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
I loved the days, you loved the night,
I loved to love, you loved to fight.
I drive to you, you're far away,
It gets harder every day.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
Wish you could be a friend of mine,
Wish you could learn to play with time.
You say I dream my life away -
If I do, well that's OK.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.
All I wanna do in life
Is to love somebody with all my might.

Enjoy....... yay
