"'Basket Of Deplorables'...
is a phrase from a 2016 presidential election campaign speech delivered by Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on September 9, 2016, at a campaign fundraising event, which she used to describe half of the supporters of her opponent, Republican nominee Donald J. Trump. The next day she expressed regret for 'saying half', while insisting that Trump had deplorably amplified 'hateful views and voices'.
"The Trump campaign repeatedly used the phrase against Clinton during and after the 2016 presidential election. Many Trump supporters adopted the 'Deplorable' moniker for themselves in reappropriation. Some journalists and political analysts questioned whether this incident played a role in the election's outcome. Clinton admitted in her 2017 book What Happened that it was one of the factors for her loss."
As noted in the definition, Deplorables have embraced the name much as American Colonists embraced the derisive term Yankee Doodle, by which they were referred to by the British.
So.
Who ARE the Deplorables? I very recently came across a vid in which Deplorables define themselves and their movement, which I've dubbed Deplorablism*.
Here, then, is what might be called The Deplorable Manifesto ...
The Manifesto is not limited to U.S. Deplorables. It traces the history of the movement to Britain & the Brexit movement - well before Clinton's use of the defining term.
Leftist film maker Michael Moore (NO Trump supporter) defined Deplorables similarly in his documentary Michael Moore In TrumpLand, released prior to the '16 Election ...
Since Brexit & the U.S. '16 Election, "Deplorables" has been loosely adopted by individuals, groups & movements in various parts of the world.
The movement has its anthem ...
... including a French version ...
... in which, BTW, the soloist totally kills it.
The anthem might be analogous to that of International Communism - "The Internationale" ("L'Internationale") ...
Should Deplorablism bring about significant changes in the world, Clinton's disdainful "Basket Of Deplorables" remark may be regarded in history as infamously as Marie Antoinette's advice, "Let Them Eat Cake".
*Deplorablism - I recently used the term in a blog comment post. I later became curious if it was an actual word & searched it
NOTHING came. Zip. Zilch. Nada!
T'would appear I've coined a new word.
