But for the grace of the Goddesses....

there go I... Early morning walks with Bravo---sometimes at sun up. Up ahead, disheveled man in his 50's, staring up a tree. Greetings exchanged, amid the strong smell of alcohol. Seems in the end stages of the "diisease". All the stigmata. Tremor, unsteady gait, rough voice. poor hearing, skin/hair changes, and so on. I ask if he's OK. He says yes, as he pets the dog . "I'm just early morning drunk". We share our stories. I say I nearly lost everything---family, work license, freedom, health, etc., ---and stopped drinking alcoholically just in time, decades ago. He says he HAS lost all those things. But he's able to speak clearly, as he searched the streets/trash bins for bottles and cans to cash redeem. As is our wont, I mention the various forms of help available. His comment, "thanks, but I'm not a preacher". Part after a hug and handshake. Grateful.

That brightened someone's day. Good on you. wine
Thanks. Yep, his name is Melvin and he's a townie, often seen collecting cans and bottles. So unfair, that some folks make it, while others don't.
Hopefully, you inspired him to make some changes for the better.
However, it's on him to make those changes. No one can make them for him.
So right you are, JN. My brother is in similar straits, and every time I visit him on Oahu, I try to drop the hints. But it's like threatening them to take away their oldest best friend, and a few times, I thought I was in for a sore nose. But I was able to have his wife join me at Al-Anon, which seems to help. One drink is too many, and a thousand are never enough.
got that right,Vier, too sad that so many are unable to grasp this simple Principle!sigh
Well, C, it's doubly sad, as alcohol is really mostly a positive item. A relaxing, mostly prosocial drug. Seems to aid digestion. Even a part of spiritual doings. But for the 10 or so percentage of most populations who may be protoalcoholics, it can destroy lives.
AND,... whenever brother number two calls, to quiz me on my progress as will and trust executor, he's always two sheets to the wind. AS IF a recovered drunk, and trained clinician wouldn't notice. Of course, the thought pops up to say something like, "please be sober when you call". "it's bad for my recovery". But in recovery, we learn to vet our thoughts behind our hurting statements, to see what role our own issue underlie it all. Rarely do we not find our own roles in such, and then bite the tongue. Grateful.
yep,Excuse #99,"only had a couple to relax"!grin
