A Right Royal Waste of Time

So lets kill the fatted calf, lets party in the street, eat drink and be merry. For our own Prince William has announced that he is to marry his long time girlfriend, the commoner Kate Middleton.

I should say at the outset that I am not a fan of our Royal Family and think they should have been abolished a long time ago.

I own a college in London and I was there yesterday, annoying the staff and students alike. When I had finished for the day I walked to a pub for a couple of drinks as I was waiting for a lady friend to pick me up. In the pub they had a large TV which was showing the interview on Sky news with Prince William and his fiance. There was no sound, only pictures. And half watching the interview as I concentrated on simultaneously drinking and playing brick breaker on my blackberry, one thing which struck me was the difference between the two of them. There was Kate who, whilst not a pretty girl, is attractive, confident and maintaining eye contact with the interviewer while William appeared to have inherited all the worst traits of both his parents. Smiling nervously, clearly insecure, unable to maintain eye contact with the interviewer......here was our future King. After years of being "groomed" for the position this was the best he could manage.

OK, does anyone really care either way? Probably not, but while we are quick to criticise countries who are not democratic according to our definition, here we have a family whose only claim to their positions is an accident of birth. And to those who say they have no real power, I say that makes it even worse! Why would we want a Head of State who has no power to achieve anything?

whilst watching that same interview it reminded me of watching the announcement of the engagement to prince charles to diana, she at the time was very shy and not holding eye contact either with the interviewer whilst prince charles came across all very confident, william is soo much like his mother but your right he is meant to be the future king and he has been groomed to play a part, it is quite worrying but then kate has been a part of the royal family for eight years now, they have not rushed into anything so hopefully they will make a go of things and stay together forever more, after all kate will be our future queen one day and she has alot to prove to herself, to the royal family and to us as a country, i think they will be good together, i think they will help eachother out where needed
good luck to them, maybe our future king and queen will become someone our kids can look up to peace
i thought that myself, i would not be too impressed if it were me. although a very beautiful ring grin
when Diana died, i was just a child. at that time, i thought: wow, are there really king and queen in this world? i thought they just existed in Andersen's fairy tales.

can i say that "there exists the kings or queens who have no real power in your country" is because that the feudalism can not be overthrew completely?

btw, what makes you write so much recently?

Linna
did you use your blackberry for this blog? drinking is kinda new this story! cool
Empyrean, congratulations in picking up on one of the most significant aspects of the blog. However the answer is that although my fingers can sometimes work fast, no I did not use the blackberry.
grin ...
i am sorry to hear that Mr. How1e. you must be very lonely when your old friends and your daughter are all gone. but no worry. you can always meet new friends on here. nice to meet you on here. handshake

i used to be very interested in your country's history, and France's history, and America's history of course. innocent but i really can not understand, why in Europe, there exist so many kings or queens in the 21th century. but i guess these things have been existing long long before i was born. so i stopped wonder why.

Linna.
Yes Hen Gugu, very lonely, its really been a difficult time sigh
I didn't realise that America really had any history, I always thought that's why a few annoying Americans come to London - to see what they dont have.
my god now i do feel old, i had not long had my daughter went poor princess diana died, i remember her getting married to prince charls and having this huge street party, litle did everyone know it would go the way it did, i remember william being born and harry lol
something i have learnt over the years is the royal family is just like any other family in this world wine
Ms Empyrean, I guess we will just have to take your word for that.
so turn him round and lets have a look then.......
as you longed-for wink
I have no idea how people could judge anyone in that spot. Just the lights are blinding them amd William , does take after his Mother. Shy to a point as she was at first, but has mastered many charitable and giving qualities. I never could understand the Royal Family's existance. Do remember, though, we do not get to pick our parents.
He is a fine young man who did not ask to be born into Royalty but still has that presence about him as Lady Diana learned, then taught her sons.
I'm not really a royal watcher, even though I was born in the annoying states as you say, lol, but I think its nice they are happily engaged..I also think its pretty sweet of him to offer his moms engagment ring to his fiance because I would think it must have a lot of sentimental value to him, and his offering it must mean he really loves this girl..I wish them all the happiness in the world.
