A serious 21\12\12 disaster blog (updated)

We learned today of a disaster about to happen the scale of which might make all that have gone before seem trivial, I've been poo-pooing the 21\12\12 theory but it seems for Andalusia, Spain it may be about to come true. A couple of weeks ago we lost some of the British TV channels, it turns out we about to loose them all, this may seem a small matter but let me explain. The economy of southern Spain is pinned up by tourism, this is largely British as it's the UK's most popular holiday destination, there is also a large contingent of British expats living here, a large part of this industry is due to British TV being available here, take this away & the trade will move north where TV will still be available. This all comes about due a new satellite which is going to replace the existing one which has reached the end of it's life (12 to 15 years), the beams on the new sat are much tighter than the old one therefore Andalusia will loose it's signal altogether. As I see it there is not a business here that will not be affected, even animals, some of whom rely on being feed by the Brits will suffer as there is a migration north. The whole British satellite industry could be wiped out over night, property values, already in serious trouble could fall through the floor, will airports & tourist attractions be able to cope? Property owners advertising rental property to tourists with British TV will have taken bookings but be unable to provide the service etc etc. Unless a solution is found & soon in my opinion this will lead to a disaster.

dunno what works, perhaps a personal satellite dish on your own rooftop? dunno
June, we all have those already, the problem is there will be no signal to receive on a dish. wave
I have a solution for you but am running out the door.
Will let you know when I get back thumbs up
Im a orthodox christian ,we do everything 14 days later than the rest of the world
example:our Christmas is at January the 7th,our new year is January the 14th...
so in this case, I expect the end of the world to happen around January the 3th

While the rest of the world is having cataclysm of biblical proportion ,I will be safe ,probably eating left overs from the pop-roast and watch the whole even on TV ...conversing
Non, the few people here that know about this are also thinking of running.wave
Boban, you are quite right, that is one of dates mentioned for some channels to go, this will also affect people from Serbia & Eastern Europe as there is a fairly large population of them working here in the tourist industry.wave
@ Z

grin always around 21/12/12 cheers
I think there is some thing more sinister going on here, that is you have not paid your T.V. license hence you are being cut off.
no idea then, but i'm hoping the folks (businessmen and politicians) won't let this happen to the place and do something about it before it all goes down the drain comfort

June, the problem there is that technically due to copyright law British TV should not be watchable in Spain, however a large industry has developed because until now is has been available.
Meta, internet may prove to be a solution in time, however you're knowledgeable about such matters so give me an opinion of the likely outcome to 500,000 login onto the net all at same time for the start of the program, I have my doubts that the net here would take that load? wave
I Zee wave

I lived in Mauritius for a year the local TV Channels where in French .... But luckily we were able to get the same South African satellite company there ... Or my daughter would have pulled my hair out if she couldn't get the Disney channel in English laugh

I hope it gets sorted out for you guys there in Spain ... Or you gona start feeling like a foreigner grin
Nessa, oddly The Disney Channel is one of the few local channels that can viewed in English here, I'm not going to say here what the British community think of Spanish television as I don't want to upset Spanish members .wave
The Ik, were it that simple.wave
Jac, you've seen the viewing figures for Eastenders, personally I don't watch it but there are programs I don't want to miss, this problem falls into two categories, 1- The expats living here & 2- The tourists, for what ever reason they both want TV available & will flock north were it's still available, for southern Spain a disaster, unemployment is at around 26% already, how much more can it take? dunno wave
Metaloona is right in a time of crises its every man for himself. laugh
Non, I like Harry Hill, I also like what's on the other side........ fightrolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing
I don't watch tv..so what is the problem again? People will have to think for themselves and read books and have other hobbies??? Oh...darn it.....dunno confused doh
Zman you got it in one laugh rolling on the floor laughing thumbs up
Calli, unfortunately the vast majority of UK holiday makers do watch TV, they like to keep up with their favourite soaps or sports or whatever & any amount of telling them they shouldn't watch while on holiday will have little impact, A question here for everyone - How many of you have, in the last ten years, have stayed in an hotel room without a TVdunno
Meta, exactly right, infrastructure, if a high percentage of the tourist industry disappears the money for new infrastructure will follow it. dunno
Just to add to the debate, I'm talking here about southern Spain because I know what's happening here, this new satellite with it's narrower beam will benefit UK viewers as they will have a stronger signal, I have not yet had any word from other countries who may have the same consequences, Greece for example may be in the same boat dunno
An update, good news - the new satellite that will take away our TV signals has crashed banana cheering applause

"The Sky unmanned Proton-M satellite has crashed. Astra 2E was due to start working on the 20th of this month to transmit the UK Freesat channels and with it's reduced transmission footprint hundreds of thousands of people in Andalucia were set to lose their favourite channels this summer.

But their disaster in our gain as we will be able to receive the channels for at least an extra 3 months while an investigation is being carried out".

Bad news - The internet service providers are trying to wriggle out of supplying streaming data here ie live TV programs moping
