un 1. defense contractor - a contractor concerned with the development and manufacture of systems of defense
armed forces, armed services, military, military machine, war machine - the military forces of a nation; "their military is the largest in the region"; "the military machine is the same one we faced in 1991 but now it is weaker"

contractor - someone (a person or firm) who contracts to build things cheers
Why? First, the contractors will only be doing one thing. Military folks have other duties in addition to whatever a contractor has to do. This means, for the purposes that contractors are used, most military folks will not have that level of training.

Second, as to training, it costs alot of mony to train any additional military folks. Also, for every extra person you add to the military, you also have to add more people to support that person (medical, logistics, housing, etc.). You do not have to do that for contractors since their companies cover that. That makes the contractor cheaper.

Third and final, after whatever mission the contractors are needed for is over, they are let go. Cost is over and done. Military people have benefits such as education, medical, family support, PCS, travel, etc. that costs a tn of money whether they are doing anything or not. Add in in additional training needed for other missions and you can see how expensive it would be to have military folks do only one thing. You only hire contractors when needed.

Almost forgot, military folks have SGLI. Contractors do not. This is important because contrary to what you may believe, contractors get put in as much harms way as any regular soldier, but do not get the benefits te soldier gets if injured or dies. Remember the guys whose bidies were burned and pulled through the streets of Baghdad? Contractors. Did their families get anything? Not much

Hi Jarred! True...I've seen it all in Iraq...contractors from different countries...I've talked to some soldiers there...working on underprivileged contract...putting their lives in danger for a year or two then go back home with very little benefits and start to look for another job...

"military contractor" LOL

(Private Companies) Involved with the interests of a Nations Foreign or domestic security and logistical issues.

The burden of proof from countless leaked documents well documented independent reports shows that these are most often
Money filters for corrupt Government officials to syphon cash into partnered businesses for Finical gain.

I have 'heard' that a Contractor is usually sourced by the local Ice-Cream compampay in the country and then sent to any war torn country to see if the hotels food is still edible and up to international standard. They then have to report back to the hotel section of the United Nations. So don't ever be afriad of a contractor they are usually harmless guys/ladies.
Thank you lukethumbs up
It's not called "military contractor" It's called "defense contractor". It is a civilian company that bids on contracts for jobs that the military outsources. That can be for IT, construction, mercenaries, oil rigs etc. A very good example was our last vice-president having been the CEO of a large firm that got contracts from the military while he was president. That sort of thing happens a lot, but that's another story.
