Would you ask a deaf person to listen harder? Would you ask a blind person to look harder?

Then why is it ok to tell someone with depression that they got to try harder?

I heard that a lot over the years and let me tell you what that does to a depressed person. It makes them feel like they are not trying and feel inadequate. It makes the hill they have to climb seem like a mountain. It makes them feel like they are not good enough. It makes the person feel even worst and retards the chances of them coming out of the depressed state. It will rarely encourage them to "snap out of it", quite the opposite. It sends a person even deeper into a depressed state.

Next time you want to tell someone depressed to try harder, don't. Just don't, its the worst thing you can do.

hey Trackhug
"Then why is it ok to tell someone with depression that they got to try harder"
Because they can try harder; even though it may only be a small amount !
Its called not giving up on people handshake nor letting them give up on themselves. dunno

Blind people Can NOT see
Deaf People Can NOT hear

Just my opinion
You're 100% right.

People have no idea.

This kind of thing has to be worked out from the inside.

When I'm down, I find that writing poetry and stories comes easy and
I can be very convincing.

When I'm up, I am very artistic and mathematical, so that is the time that
I draw and make business proposals.

Funny thing is, once I put the highs and the lows to work for me, instead
of against me, it was no longer a problem, but a blessing.

What are YOU good at, and WHEN?

cool

"People have no idea."
You're a person. Yet you assume you have an Idea confused
Double standard from the get go.

Have you a monopoly on opinion in this issue. dunno

Clarify what you mean thumbs up
VikingSon,
I'm not trying to undermine your reasoning,
I have just re read what you said and you are right...
Sorry about that..

Sorry for interrupting your blog Track.. Carry on handshake
Never ask an OCD person to-stop doing that, or ADHD, or ACDC.flirty
Clinical (major) depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Those chemicals regulate our moods. When they are out, moods change and go out of whack. Its like trying to swim upstream a fast moving river, no matter how much you fight it, you got that current pushing you back.

Do I try? Believe it or not, yes. Thats why I'm still here alive. Thats why I go to the doctors and take the medications. Thats why I talk openly about this.

Today I feel ok. Thats why I can organize my thoughts and write this blog. On a down day though, thoughts are disorganized and there is a heavy weight on my chest and it makes it difficult to function. Its not as easy as "trying harder", your fighting that river and its relentless. It don't bend or break, its just there.
Hey Track,
was wondering who the heck the new blogger wasconfused

Humble ain'tcha! rolling on the floor laughing never stopped you from encouraging us to join you.(.)(.)your new Emoji .
Itchy, talk therapy could work in some cases. Its another tool in the tool bag for dealing with depression. For some people, its just what the doctor ordered.
Track most folks on cs have given a optimistic opinion, if they said nothing it means they do not care. sometimes folk do not know what to say if they have not suffered severe depression but just to say something means they care and those words try harder is their only way of helping hug
Thanks for the advice Track. I truly appreciate. Is there anything anyone can do? Or is it better to leave them alone but show love and concern? hug
Its good to offer encouragement, just try not to push them too much. You have to remember its a chemical imbalance you are dealing with, not just a mindset.
Sometimes maybe a lot of things to be depressed about, that's life...

But for others, depressed is life... teddybear
Thats why its important to enjoy the good times when they roll around
I said nothing because I didn't want to end up saying the wrong things...therefore hug and kisses show that I care.. I've dealt with persons who has Alzheimer, dementia, depression and end stage renal disease and sometimes a listening ear and a kind gesture is all you can give to make the person feel loved. hug
so before you fall, hit the high way whilst you can dancing

Love that song grin

Thank you bouquet
Track, I don't know a lot about depression, apart from what I have seen , heard and learned.
I know you probably want people not to disagree with you, so stop reading now if so.

Depression being diagnosed as a 'chemical imbalance ' only seems to have come about since there were tablets invented for chemical imbalances.
Every emotion each of us have affects the chemical balance. That is natural.
People prone to depression seem to have higher highs and lower lows on an emotional level. The way the emotions are handled affects these highs and lows. Psychotherapy can help enormously there.
Thyroid problems, diet & food intolerances, etc., can be physical causes of the symptoms.

I'm just saying, don't just accept the label of "chemical imbalance" as if it is something you have no control over, and only drug companies can control it. It worries me when practically 'new' diseases are given over to the whims of the pharmaceutical industry

There is a of truth in what your saying. Having said that, I do do a lot better with medications than without.

Medications as they are now only manage symptoms, it don't cure. There is no ruse in finding a cure as there is big money in medications as they are now.

Recent studies suggest that vitamin D plays a role in producing serotonin in the brain. I take vitamin December every day.
Track, Vit D is used as a supplement to counteract the symptoms of SAD in winter, so it should probably help.

Use the meds to regulate it, and keep doing research into other causes and cures. bouquet
Genetics has a lot to do with my condition, there are others in my family who have similar conditions too. I do try to keep open too other causes, triggers, and patterns that lead to it.
