Would you ask a deaf person to listen harder? Would you ask a blind person to look harder? Then why is it ok to tell someone with depression that they got to try harder?
I heard that a lot over the years and let me tell you what that does to a depressed person. It makes them feel like they are not trying and feel inadequate. It makes the hill they have to climb seem like a mountain. It makes them feel like they are not good enough. It makes the person feel even worst and retards the chances of them coming out of the depressed state. It will rarely encourage them to "snap out of it", quite the opposite. It sends a person even deeper into a depressed state.
Next time you want to tell someone depressed to try harder, don't. Just don't, its the worst thing you can do.

Because they can try harder; even though it may only be a small amount !
Its called not giving up on people nor letting them give up on themselves.
Blind people Can NOT see
Deaf People Can NOT hear
Just my opinion
People have no idea.
This kind of thing has to be worked out from the inside.
When I'm down, I find that writing poetry and stories comes easy and
I can be very convincing.
When I'm up, I am very artistic and mathematical, so that is the time that
I draw and make business proposals.
Funny thing is, once I put the highs and the lows to work for me, instead
of against me, it was no longer a problem, but a blessing.
What are YOU good at, and WHEN?
"People have no idea."
You're a person. Yet you assume you have an Idea
Double standard from the get go.
Have you a monopoly on opinion in this issue.
Clarify what you mean
I'm not trying to undermine your reasoning,
I have just re read what you said and you are right...
Sorry about that..
Sorry for interrupting your blog Track.. Carry on
Do I try? Believe it or not, yes. Thats why I'm still here alive. Thats why I go to the doctors and take the medications. Thats why I talk openly about this.
Today I feel ok. Thats why I can organize my thoughts and write this blog. On a down day though, thoughts are disorganized and there is a heavy weight on my chest and it makes it difficult to function. Its not as easy as "trying harder", your fighting that river and its relentless. It don't bend or break, its just there.
was wondering who the heck the new blogger was
Cool
But for others, depressed is life...
Thank you
I know you probably want people not to disagree with you, so stop reading now if so.
Depression being diagnosed as a 'chemical imbalance ' only seems to have come about since there were tablets invented for chemical imbalances.
Every emotion each of us have affects the chemical balance. That is natural.
People prone to depression seem to have higher highs and lower lows on an emotional level. The way the emotions are handled affects these highs and lows. Psychotherapy can help enormously there.
Thyroid problems, diet & food intolerances, etc., can be physical causes of the symptoms.
I'm just saying, don't just accept the label of "chemical imbalance" as if it is something you have no control over, and only drug companies can control it. It worries me when practically 'new' diseases are given over to the whims of the pharmaceutical industry
Medications as they are now only manage symptoms, it don't cure. There is no ruse in finding a cure as there is big money in medications as they are now.
Recent studies suggest that vitamin D plays a role in producing serotonin in the brain. I take vitamin December every day.
Use the meds to regulate it, and keep doing research into other causes and cures.
